Snarl Peak Wildfire
July 14, 2015
Background
On July 14, a lightning-caused wildfire was spotted on the north slopes of Snarl Peak in Banff National Park, approximately 80 km north of the Banff townsite in a remote area of the Clearwater river valley.
The current size of the fire is approximately 300 hectares.
Due to the remote location and terrain, Parks Canada fire crews are using indirect fire management techniques through ignition and aerial support to contain the fire to Banff National Park.
Fire crews from Mount Revelstoke-Glacier and Prince Albert national parks are on hand to assist with Banff crews.
An area closure has been put in place until further notice in the lower Clearwater river valley.
To ensure visitor safety, a thorough sweep of the area was conducted.
There were no users in the area and backcountry bookings for the area have been closed. Crews continue to sweep inside and outside the closure area to continue to ensure safety.
A fire ban remains in place for Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, Jasper, Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks.
