Oil Companies Creating Lakes
An article in the Herald today sounds like good news... anyone aware of or know more about this?
"Oil companies create lakes ‘from scratch’ to try to replace destroyed fish habitat in north Alberta"

Where does it say this gives greater leeway or excuse oil companies to "destroy natural rivers and lakes"? It doesnt make degrading the environment as they've always done ok, but depending how well planned and executed, maybe it could be a good thing?

Good to see. Funny these stories don't get reported more.
I wonder how many jobs scientists and environmentalists would lose were it not for the energy industry??

Alberta could use a bunch of lakes up north. Here's hoping the oil companies keep making these jewels. I might have to try and find some time to travel up there this summer. I wonder if they're open to the public yet, or still in the experimental stage??

Yes, because Alberta has no environmental regulations that the O&G companies must adhere to.

Ha
Did anybody read the article?
"lakes nearby to replace fish habitat their companies have destroyed."
How about they not destroy it in the first place?
I guarantee you that was not in the EIA.
But hey,
I have in depth knowledge on the issue. I'm not interested in a mud slinging. Why don't you go up north to Mildred Lake and drop in a line fellas, same idea, but its actually a natural Lake the companies took over.
Do yourself a favor and don't eat the fish though.

It's been done successfully a bunch of times in central Alberta's coal branch, can't see why it wouldn't work elsewhere. These sort of plans are often detailed in EIA'S well ahead of time, lots of cool technology out there now.

I worked on a project for Fort Hills a few years ago that built a lake to replace one that will be removed by the mine. On the west bank of the Athabasca River. It included a fish ladder so fish could come up from the river to spawn as well as spawning habitat. I would love to go back one day to see how it is working. I believe access is restricted. It would be cool to go in during the winter and drill some holes and drop a camera down to see what's there

All oil companies are guilty of making a mess both above ground and below, some just hide it well or throw up a smoke screen by reclamation sites or making lakes, animal crossings etc.

Sounds like you need to watch all the gold mining shows to see what they are doing to streams.
Companies mitigate damage done. Nothing wrong with that. Likely there has been no mitigation on the wildlife habitat destroyed by the building of your home. Over reaction with no basis seems the order of the day.

How much mitigation was done for the kananaskis golf course when they destroyed a stream? None. Habitat replacement for all the Canmore developments? None. Roads to get to people's favorite fishing hole? None.

Oil companies have to put it all back together or leave it better than when they left.

Name a group that doesn't make a mess or alter Alberta? Oil and gas? Mining? Forestry? Farming? Urban expansion? Roads? Power infrastructure? Quadding? Camping?

The oil field keeps coming up with creative ways to use water. I imagine now the rivers are going to be lower because the water will be diverted to the fake lakes instead of down the holes.
We're gonna need water pipelines from the east soon.

Why? Global warming is filling the oceans too fast. Reduce the flow... Drill and frac more wells. Save New Orleans.

Explain your point. Didn't your teachers in school always tell you to show your work?
Here's some homework... read this, and we'll discuss it friday:

Should we try and minimize that impact? Absolutely. Just like the oil companies are doing. Minimizing their impact on the environment, but still providing a product that you demand of them.

Re: "Just like the oil companies are doing"
You know as well as I do that because of their political power that they, as well as other industries get away with far too much. Heres one example...
"The most consistent and pervasive threat to the persistence of a viable caribou population in Alberta stems from resource extraction industries, which are causing an overall loss and fragmentation of habitat. Reports from locals and government biologists dating back 60 years have documented the absence of caribou following the establishment of industrial activity in an area. Over the past 30 years, field biologists"

Nothing has been done to mitigate this.
