Shipping a dog to Texas

I used to take dogs down as checked luggage, which was very reasonable and simple. The last one had to go as cargo, which was a little more work (had to make a special trip to the airport from Rocky) and cost about $500. This spring we called, and were quoted some very high prices and mulitple trips to the airport. Driving to Montana and flying from there didn't change the price much.

Have any AO members recently shipped a dog to the US? I'm gifting a 6 month old border collie to a friend down there, and wondering what I'm missing as it shouldn't be this difficult. If any snowbirds are headed to South Texas, I'd gladly pay them to deliver Essie. I'm going down in December but the puppy can be sent at anytime. Thanks in advance to anyone who may have some advice.

There is a few land transport companies that do it but have to drive into the states to do it.We used Gun Dog Express but we had to drive to ND but that has been a few years ago there is others out there now.

Have to google it but you will need evidence that it has all the required shots.
