Both of our highways south of town are closed due to fire as well.

A friend of mine was there and sent me this picture before the evacuation.

1000 km detour to get out of there.

He didn’t note any storms or dry lightning.

Was speaking to a parks employee a few years back. We got to talking about the inbred caribou and fire management. They said that if a fire hits that valley to the south it would be almost impossible to contain.

They have their work cut out for them. Hope everyone stays safe!

With the amount of bug killed pine in the area it was only a matter of time until it became a crap show. It’s going to be a big hot fire.

I worked on the Whistler's campground redo, and the amount of beetle kill pine we took out of there was staggering. The rest of the valley is an absolute tinderbox.

Sure hope people are safe.

Hope everyone gets out safe, but you have to wonder not only about the Alberta Emergency alert system, but the resources that are being used in Alberta to fight and deal with the wildfires.
According to a person who had to flee the wildfire in Jasper, the alert was announced last night at 10 pm, and they were told they had to leave by 3 am, no exceptions. The province of BC has stepped forward to provide lodging and emergency services to the evacuees from Jasper as Highway 16 East has been closed. But let's face it BC is facing their own big problems with the wildfires this season as they have in excess of 300 wildfires that they are trying to deal with and get a handle on. Kudos to that province for stepping forward and lending a helping hand to those fleeing the wildfire.

They have been doing mitigation work over the years, but yeah, this fire was coming at some point or another.

I'm quite confident that this was expected, however. Hopefully the plans they have put in place will suffice to save the town.

I took the below photos in 2018 from Indian Ridge.

Beetle kill extended all the way south to the icefield and basically all the way to the east gate.

Entire park is likely a tinderbox.

Gorgeous photos, TheIceTitan.

For sure, it was prime for a burn. Cook those beetles good!

Alberta provincial ministers where are you when you need them? Okay so Danielle Smith is down in Calgary for the grand presentation for the Scotia Place which will be amongst other things the new playground for the Flames. However, why isn't Mike Ellis the Minister of Emergency Services, or Todd Loewen the Minster of Forestry and Public lands stepping forward to offer help and direction to the tourists and Albertans who have been displaced by the Jasper Fire. The latest news released is that because many of the small towns such as Valemount in BC are now full and cannot accept anymore evacuees. People seeking assistance are now being told to drive back to Alberta and go to Grande Prairie, for instance, if they have been displaced by the wildfire.
This is disappointing news to hear.

As stated above Jasper Park has been a tinder box waiting to explode that is way past its burn date. I have a close friend in forestry that has been preaching this for years. It is and has been a disaster in the making. I understand it’s complicated. Trudeau will jump on the climate scam and others will too but when you hold nature back this long the clock has been ticking, the alarm has been ringing for years. Prayers for the people being disrupted that sucks!

Pretty sure centers have been set up for evacuees in GP, Calgary, and Edmonton and include coordination for lodging, funding, and other essentials. I'm not personally effected by this, so haven't really been following it, but am hearing direction and assistance have been offered/are available.

I only caught the tail end of it but Loewen was on the news this morning dressed up in wildfire attire discussing the current situation.

The residents of Jasper have to come through bc to get into Alberta. Pretty long drive to get to the city’s.
Either up to Prince George and back in by grande prairie or take the southern loop.

I’m 80 km west of Jasper and Mcbride/valemount has several fires close by.
Was on evacuation notice couple days ago. Haven’t checked recently.

I'm not sure why you continue to rant, other than you're part of a larger problem.
The last thing I need is the government (or anyone else for that matter) taking care of me.
Fire, flood, bankruptcy, evacuation...all things that can be dealt as long as health and family are good.

I sincerely hope no lives are lost due to the fires, and the flames don't come into town.
Strong north winds today should help.
A good downpour would be nice too.

The web cams in Jasper are interesting to monitor:

Jasper SkyTram
Maligne Lake
Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre

Those tourist hotspots are conspicuously empty right now.

The alert has been "downgraded" to an advisory at this point; up-to-date information is here, and the federal site is here.

The reason I am ranting about it is that it was the government that made the decision to evacuate. At 10 pm according to people who lived there they were told they had to leave Jasper. The latest they had was until 3 am. Also the authorities made the decision to close HWY 16 East to Hinton, Edson, or Edmonton. As people are reporting last night they had to go East to BC. There was no choice, you could not stay at all anywhere in Jasper National Park.

That is under review at this point, according to the news.

Quote:
Alberta is looking into how potentially frightening messaging about the Jasper wildfire was sent to residents during an evacuation alert on Monday.

The original Alberta Emergency Alert – sent at 10:30 p.m. – said a wildfire was five hours away from reaching town. An updated alert sent 45 minutes later said residents had five hours to evacuate.

That initial information and the update came from the local municipality and the incident command team in the Jasper area, Alberta Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis explained Tuesday.

“They would have made that decision… based upon the information that they had at the time,” Ellis said. “As new information came in, they corrected it.

“We’re going to have to inquire as to what is the data that the municipality used in order to make that decision.”

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says it’s a new process to allow municipalities to directly access the emergency alert system.

“This is the first time that Jasper has done so,” Smith said. “We may need to just have an additional step to make sure when information is going out, it’s being communicated accurately, and so it doesn’t cause that kind of panic.

“Nobody wants to be in a state of panic at 11 p.m. not knowing where they’re going to go.”

Reminds me of truckers fiasco in Ottawa couple years ago. Federal buildings, with protestors. Rely on province to make the moves. Last I checked National Parks under federal jurisdiction.
