Default Small knife sharpener

Hey All, I just bought a couple of Victor-Knox knives for field and home butchering. CTR has them for a better price than Amazon!
Any recommendations for a small, easy to use sharpener to keep the edge on the knives while I am in the middle of a job?
TIA

They are fantastic.

One of the rolling sharpeners. It's not a Field use sharpener by any means, unless you have a flat surface to work on.

Worksharp has one, as well as a small pull through sharpener. I also have the Worksharp Field sharpener that works very well for it's intended purpose.

The worksharp field sharpener works really well.

Lansky and Smiths make a similar hand product....I have one in my pack as well.
Excellent in the field for a "touch-up needed basis"....Canadian Tire, KMS Tools, Home Depot etc...they are easy to find.

This guy right here. $7 can't go wrong, and easy to toss in your kill kit so you always have it when you need it.

The steel in those Victorinox knives is pretty easy to sharpen. I just use an oilstone every couple of deer, and give them a few swipes on a steel at least every quarter.

IMO you want a quality steel that DOES NOT have an abrasive coating, it should simply straighten out the edge rather than remove metal. I've been using a steel since I was 12 and am pretty handy with one... however, if I use a diamond coated steel long enough I will end up with a lopsided edge that will need to be fixed. Trust me, your wrist will likely never be accurate enough that you want the steel to actually alter the edge geometry.

Lastly, do your sharpening pre-emptively before your blade gets seriously dull and the job will be quick, minor, and easy.

A simple butchers steel will keep an edge on a knife for a day. You will need more to really sharpen it at the end of a job though.

"kill kit" ! I've never heard it called that, but I like it. I am going to order one and toss it in my pack.

I have a set of 3 credit card-sized diamond stones I got on Amazon a few years ago. They work pretty well and are pretty easy to transport, I often just keep one in my wallet. I think you should be able to buy them individually on the Amazon page for cheaper than the whole set which should probably be all you’d need for just keeping your edge touched up in the field.

Those pull through sharpeners are terrible for your knives.

That's all I have to contribute as my knives generally stay sharp well after the animal is home so I don't need to sharpen in the field. I do use the DMT coarse fine extra fine blocks with a sharpal 17 degree angle guide and then a strop when I do sharpen at home.

Nothing could be worse for your knife.

With the right steel you shouldn't need to touch the edge of your knife, even doing full gutless. I wouldn't use a pull through on any knife I liked. They tear huge chunks off the steel and leave a terrible edge that rolls easily. I keep a small patch of leather stitched around a bic lighter in my kill kit that has stropping compound on it. I will use that at about the halfway mark just for the sake of it now... I have tested my knives edge retention enough to know I don't really need to do anything.....any of the small flat diamond plates ( I like DMT!) Are good tag alongs I also really like the ceramic rods that come with ne of the Lansky systems.. Great for just touching up the edge. The field sharpener from worksharp is a great tool but way bigger/ heavier than I want to carry around.

If you don't line up your angle exactly with the last pull you are sharpening a new edge every time, takes off a ton of metal it doesn't need to.
