Default Gift Ideas for a Power Lineman Apprentice moving onto a Journeyman?

My boyfriend will be completing his apprenticeship to become a journeyman power lineman this June, and I have no idea what to get for him. There are a lot of tacky nicknacky type gifts that I'm not personally interested in. But I would like to get him something with meaning. Has anyone got a really thoughtful gift for completing their apprenticeship?

I have a photo of him working on a line, and I was thinking of creating some kind of canvas art piece for him. I also know that the apprentices get to put their hat up somewhere around the city as memorabilia type ceremony, and I was trying to incorporate that somehow, but I'm really at a loss for what to do.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

Maybe a nice hunting knife or fillet knife with a custom leather scabbard. Have the scabbard branded with "Lineman" or "Hot-Hander". Then for years to come whenever he uses that item, skinning an elk, or filleting a walleye he will always look fondly on where he received it.

If he's going to be spending a lot of time spiking up pole, a high end set of spikes and comfortable pads (especially) are worth their weight in gold. Buckinghams are the go to.

Geesh, I've completed 2 apprenticeships(power lineman and electrician) and I received nothing at all for either of them. Other than a J-man certificate and a raise.

But if your heart is set on it, get him something that doesn't involve work.

If you're on this site, he isn't. So my guess is he doesn't hunt.

I'd never want anything artistic related to my work. My artwork preferences distract me from work i.e. fly fishing art, outdoors art, world class wildlife photography mounted on canvas...

And professional equipment is very personal. Don't buy work stuff ever for him. Professionals know what they want.

You know him. Buy him something that shows you know what makes him tick.

A hunting knife can really be an awesome idea. Also a Pocket Cigarette Lighter With Knife ( https://plasmarex.com/ ) seems a useful thing too. With the lighter, making fire for you bf would be a breeze and it is cheap too. Your bf will appreciate as matches are not that really reliable especially when they get wet.

Get him a coin set from this year, the year he graduates. The gift of gold or silver isn't just for women.

Default This year

With this economy a job would be nice. My son wrote his final TQ Provincial and IP tests a little over a week ago and got his notification from his employer of the past 3 years the same week they didnt have any work for him now that he is a J man. Tough to find work in the trades right now as a lot of companies are mothballing existing projects until they can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

You should post what trade your son works in, lots of tradesmen on the forum here, somebody might be able to offer input on who might be hiring.
