Default Unite the left?

I don't know if political posts are still allowed, but this one is non partisan so I hope that it is O.K.

There is a promise of a new federal election system which will not be "first past the post" and that in itself could have a huge impact on the Federal election landscape. Just yesterday the federal NDP has pretty much removed themselves from being a major party with the ability to form a government in Canada.

I'm guessing that will bring Canada back to a 2 party system even without any change to the voting system.

It should help the Libs but what if any impact will it have on the right?

The Libs will gain and the Cons will lose support if it happens.

The majority of Canadians identify with centralist and left of centre political views.

Canadians will eventually be fed up with political party sleaze and corruption and support independent candidates - just like is currently happening in the US.

Currently, 43% of American voters call themselves independent - a record high. The Republican Party will probably implode if the nomination is stolen from Trump.

The old right vs left political party thing will get very blurred at the end of the day. You will vote for a candidate - not a party - that aligns the most with your political views.

Right or left, ego gets in the way of unite impulse. I also believe the Federal NDP's flirtatious leap to the left will earn them 3rd party status for the next 20 years. With proportional representation, the party that successfully claims the center will rule most of the time.

If the NDP could convince Nenshi to run for their leadership - it might turn their fortunes around....

It would take a political mastermind, someone very intelligent, with a great positive vision for Canada, a true Canadian, to unite the left. Like Harper did for the right.

I just don't see it happening.

The NDP took a hard turn left this week. Those supporters who leave aren't going to the Conservative ranks. The NDP just guaranteed another 20 years of Liberal rule.

I think it will depend on how the Liberals budget(s) that is full of holes pans out.
If it doesn't stimulate the economy they will be in trouble.

Canadians of all stripes don't like deficits with no plan to balance the budget.

Combine that with a new Conservative leader that might be seen as closer to centre, and it's a toss up. Think Peter McKay.

Agree totally. I suppose a guy who only works 48 hrs/week has time to ponder such things

Won't draw any Liberals to vote conservative with him. A fresh face is needed.

Belinda Stronach was a fan

In all seriousness, I'm sure more than a few 'red tories' voted liberal this time around, as they perceived Harper as 'far right'. Might not draw any true liberals into the fold, but it would likely be enough to convince the 'progressive conservative' voters to return.
