Default Edmonton police monitoring social media

https://www.thetyee.ca/News/2024/08/...-Social-Media/

Apparently critics get labeled anti police and then the police spend the their time monitoring the critics social media.
Seems like a good productive use of their time. Police are probably looking for a way to make it up to the critics and change their view to a positive one. We are so lucky in this country.

Has to start somewhere. Look what their doing in the UK recently. Been seeing reports that internet guys are getting jail time for their words. Violent immigrant offenders getting nothing but a slap and back on the streets.

So they have time for this, yet no time to respond to actual calls. Typical political nonsense.

Words and opinions are low hanging fruit... Much easier to prosecute.

Default Overtime Stake Out Inquiry

Why are you all so surprised by the EPS monitoring the Social Media of their Critics?

Not so long ago, there was a News Reporter who was very critical of the actions of the EPS. Somehow there was a social gathering at the Overtime Lounge that the News Reporter was going to and EPS decided to do a stake out in hopes of charging the News Reporter with Impaired Driving.

Sure enough there was a pull over and the Reporter was very upset and not impaired.

The Lawyer Tom Engel represented the Reporter at the Complaint on the Internal Affairs investigation hearing.

Classic line from the lead investigator. He was getting a "chubby" just thinking about charging the Reporter.

Needless to say, Tom Engel has faced Police investigation for years.

I had the unfortunate experience of cross examining a Constable which resulted in a written decision that was critical of the Constable. For years I kept getting pulled over by the EPS. Usually after asking why I had so many trailer balls on my bumper, and anything else they could ask, they let me go.

Surely there was a real criminal that could be investigated at the time, but the Constable was upset for being singled out.

But it sure seems more important that the Police focus on the law abiding citizens.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers are monitoring this site. They are gathering information and using it against people. I was told that 3 weeks ago when I was out fishing and stopped/checked for my license by the officer. He told that to me directly and no one else in the boat.

They have the technology to know your real name and home address behind your login name.

Recently in Drayton the police said that cyber crimes are more prevalent than actual crimes so they are using their resources for those crimes. no time to go and do actual policing, but while they are sitting in the office on the computer they have up to 5 vehicles running in the parking lot not moving or doing anything. Looks like poor management to me.

No one knows who is actually posting stuff. As far as anyone knows, an AO member could allow anyone to post under their name. The logistics to prove anything would be ridiculous.

But, it gives the authorities a place to start. And if you are chatty, you will be given enough rope to hang yourself.

And if you're particularly outspoken, ignorant, and hurtful, you're maybe gonna get charged. Because, hurt feelings.

One former member posted about using a supplemental deer tag, on a deer that was by definition, " antlered " . Of course he made up the excuse that it only had one antler, and he never saw it.

Have seen lots of social media and Facebook stuff that people forget is not anonymous that would be a great starting point for different investigations. Or at least make people someone of interest to authorities.

Use your heads folks.

Of course the authorities watch social media.

You know how many poaching cases are made each year from trolling the Facebook or internet crimes against children, human trafficking etc.. all from searching various classifieds? You would be utterly shocked and disgusted if you knew the numbers.

Hehe...when the muskeg is decent, I am a frequent traveler there. Maybe we'll meet one fall during moose hunting season...

The fact that F&W monitor forums like this has been common knowledge for years

I don't recall that one, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same person made that mistake , and posted about it as well. Some people just don't think before they post.
