Help With Identifying Rifle

Hi All,

Hoping that someone can give me some information. A friend of mine brought over an old rifle that he hoped I could help him with. Im no gun expert other than cleaning and mounting scopes and such so I decided to take some pictures and see what info I could find on it for him. I tried getting a picture of the markings on the rifle but none turned out enough to read.

There is a crown with GR 1918 and a capitol S with HT underlined next to it and L.E. and III under that with a * next to that ( Hope that makes sense )
I have the S/N and looks to be a 303..hard to tell as most of the markings have been stamped over with a X.

Anyone have some ideas? Or know of a site that this info can be researched on?

A bubba version of the Short Magazine Lee Enfield Mark III*. (Sht L.E. III*)

The receiver was made in 1918.

It was modified for sport use - who knows - anytime after WWI - the modifier probably is the one who stamped over the other markings with the x.

Lee Enfield No 1 Mark 3* 1918, GR stands for Geroge V
The action is Lee and the rifling is Enfield = Lee Enfield

looks to be a 303..hard to tell as most of the markings have been stamped over with a X.

if the 303 has been stamped over it may not be chambered for a 303 any more. might want to look in to that before you shoot it.
