Default Would you sell the Ruger M77Mk11 for……

I’m down to one rifle now a Ruger M77 mk11 stainless black laminate in 30-06. I went to P&d for some components and by accident I shouldered Tikka 30-06 wood with stainless barrel. It seemed a to fit me perfectly and was attractive.
Would you keep the Ruger or sell it and get the Tikka. They also have an xbolt that was interesting as well.
I’m perfectly happy with the Ruger, it was my first new rifle.
Just liked the new stuff on the shelf.

Ruger's are great rifles, but they can be better by installing an aftermarket trigger. Tikka is a great platform with good triggers and removable clip if that floats your boat.

The Tikka actions are nice and they shoot good, I just don´t like how the stock feels
The x-bolt is nice and very accurate, sets factory 143 ELD-X side by side at 500 yards-my dad has killed 2 elk with it and my brother killed one
I have no experience with the Ruger but it is probably a nice gun too

Slipped on that darn banana hey....

Sounds like you need another rifle, better get two.

I still have my first rifle, even though I don't particularly enjoy shooting it, I'm sentimental I guess. For that reason alone, I'd keep the Ruger. Besides, it's a perfectly fine firearm.

So much for being a one gun hunter...so keep the Ruger AND get the Tikka.

My dream is to someday be a one gun safe hunter!

I'd keep the Ruger and get a new rifle or 2. So maybe get both if you like them and a trigger job on the Ruger. You have to end this 1 month tomfoolery thinking you can get by with one. May my wife never see the 1 gun thread.

Ruger M77 mkIIs are TANKS og a gun, tough, you can beat them up, get them wet, drop them off quads (obviously not intentionally) and they still shoot straight.

I had a bad reload get stuck in the breech once hunting and figured my day was over - my buddy who knows mausers starts beating on the bolt with a 3" diameter green tree branch like he was a blacksmith. I am standing there yelling at him to stop just imagining the repair cost going up with each bolt hit - He must have hit that thing 25 times and not a scratch - popped the casing out with the amazing extractor and loaded another round in. NOT a SINGLE mark. I love that rifle.

ON THE OTHER HAND - my girlfriends Tikka T3 compact is one of the lightest rifles with the smoothest action and accurate beyond most other rifles - but mags are $200 for a large one and I would not take that thing anywhere that needed to be durable.

Both are amazing but for different reasons. Don't sell the M77 mkII and buy the other in a slightly different calibre and enjoy them both.

Haha. Then he shouldn’t have sold his Ruger 1.

If you want to be one-gun guy and like the Ruger, keep it, imo. I’d take the Tikka or X-Bolt myself. You would have to add money to buy either, no? If you like the Ruger better, keep it.

Nope. I wouldn’t sell what you have to go to a tikka or an x bolt.

I have to work really hard to shoot a Tikka well. I have had a number of them, and they just don’t do it for me. The X bolt, well… I am a huge fan of the A bolt 1 and 2 rifles, but the X bolt just doesn’t do it for me either. Your Ruger will do all you ask of it, and well, if you’re happy with it I would just quit looking at others if you want to stay a 1 gun hunter.

Personally I'd keep the Ruger even if I bought the Tikka. Can always change your mind down the road if you feel like you aren't getting enough use out of either.

That is to say, if the Tikka really does fit you better. May suit you better in the long run.

On a similar note, I just switched to a left-handed rifle for my main big-game rifle, and I thought it would feel more natural. I'm glad I kept my old right-handed one in case I don't adapt well.

Oh and my new one is a Tikka, and my old one is a Ruger.

Should never had stopped at the gun counter. I’ll keep the Ruger. Just wanted to know if I would getting much more with a new rifle. The Ruger has been great for me in the past. I will now start looking at putting a better scope on it. I’m taking it out on my final elk hunt up north for the season.
Thanks for your thoughts

you've already said you'd keep the ruger, so sounds like you've decided......but i'd ditch the ruger in a heartbeat if the tikka fits. of course i'm a died in the wool tikka guy and have never had much good to say about ruger.

just another opinion.

If it would be shotgun ,I would buy the one that fits best . But being a hunting riffle that you only raise a few times a year to take a shot I would keep what you have as the Ruger is a fine rifle for a 30 06 . Heck just wearing a different outdoor winter coat makes a difference . Chances are you were wearing a light jacket in the store when lifting the tikka that did not even have a scope .
The Tikka will be there next year and the Ruger is all set and ready for this years season which will be over in 33 days ,or maybe just one more weekend if your lucky .

I agree and in the same caliber, for obvious reasons.

It doesn't take much to ruin a planned hunt if your rifle or scope fails and you are 5 hours from home....

Back in the day I had a mk11 stainless/plastic in 7wsm for about 2 months. Although it looked nice and seemed well made I couldn't get it to shoot so I sent it down the road. I have had a few Tikkas and every one of them shot good or great. Now I will buy a Tikka over any ruger eveytime if those are the 2 options.

Hmmm... this thread has me thinking. No, nope, not a 1 gun person, not me.

I've got a LH Tikka T3X stainless 30-06 and a LH M77 MkII in laminate/stainless 30-06. The M77 had a 6 1/2 pound trigger pull and I put in an aftermarket trigger spring made for M77 MkII's, took it down to a more reasonable 4-4.5 pounds.

I'm probably going to put 2 rifles into the car for hunting season. One will be a spare just in case.
