Default recoil pad

I bought a bolt action rifle that has a thick recoil pad glued on. I know it has come up before but I can't remember the trick of removing the pad without damaging the wood.

Make sure it is actually glued on, that is rare with wooden stocks. The usual method to attach a recoil pad to wood, is Philips head screws that are buried in the recoil pad. Use a Philips screwdriver to try and locate the hidden openings to access the screws. A drop of oil on the screwdriver shaft, makes the job easier.

You can use a razor blade like the ones made for paint scrapers or an Olfa knife blade once the screws (if there are any) are removed.
Cut into the pad as close as you can to the stock, then continue making small cuts as you pry the rubber down/away.
You will probably have to sand the stock a little to get all of the remaining glue/rubber off.
I’ve only had to do this once on a custom rifle and it was super easy.

You are right elk, it did have screws. The cuts in the pad for the screws were not evident until I got POed and started to cut and pry the decelerator pad off. They may have been glued shut. Now to find a slimer pad.

Western Gun Parts carries all manner of Pachmeyer recoil pads.

If you go here you can get a sizing chart:

FWIW: prefit pads seldom fit very well.

Default recoil pad

Thanks to all, I will check them out. The gun would have had a hard plastic pad. I will see if I can find something similar for that old Husky. They fit me well and I don't mind the kick from that '06.

I think I have the plastic recoil pad off my 9.3. Send me a PM if you want it.
