Default 24/25 Calgary Flames

Well, seeing that the '24/'25 season kicked off last Friday, I thought I'd fire up the Flames thread for the year. Playoffs are likely out of reach, especially if we trade Kuzmenko, Mantha, Barrie, and Andersson at the deadline, but, you never know, they might be better than expected. Escpecially since there will likely be some really bad teams in the Division, Ducks and Sharks, that the Flames will play 7 or 8 times (combined).

The lines aren't set yet, but it's looking like they'll be composed of:

Kuzmenko-Kadri-Sharangovich
Zary-Backlund-Coleman
Huberdeau-Pospisil-Mantha
Lomberg-Rooney-Klapka

Weegar-Miomanov
Bahl-Andersson
Bean-Barrie

Vladar-Wolf

Which, doesn't look terrible.

The thing that annoys me though, you ship off Hanafin, Mangiapane, Markstrom, Tanev, Lindholm, Zadorov, and Toffoli, enter the rebuild right? But, then they go out and sign Lomberg (who I quite like), Mantha, and Barrie, then you've got left wing, 19 year old Sam Honzek who had an amazing camp, second in points/top in +/- for the preseason, noticed him for positive reasons almost every night, got better as camp progressed, etc. Where is he gonna play, we don't have room for him. Probably not gonna bump Kuzmenko who scored every other game for the Flames last season, gonna bump 23 year old Zary after his break out season last year, how about Huberdeau with seven years left on his deal, maybe Lomberg, who you just signed? So you've got a 1st round draft pick, who had a great camp, and don't have room for him on a rebuilding team? Feels to me they are still trying to be competitive. Can't see them being super competitive against the likes of Dallas, Winnipeg, Colorado, Vancouver, Vegas though but way better than Sharks, Ducks, Blackhawks. Feels like the old familiar lets finish 9-11, so, not good enough for the playoffs, but not bad enough to get a game breaker in he draft, the wonderful Murky Middle. Just annoyed a "rebuilding" team, after shipping out multiple veterans, doesn't appear to have room for a 1st round 19 year old who had a great camp.

They have a new motto in the dressing room...

I like Lomberg too, but Honzek and Coronato and Pelletier need to be brought in if they want to actually rebuild.

Huberdeau is the biggest impediment to rebuilding, with his cap hit and mediocre performance.

Pelletier on waivers this morning was an interesting move. I always thought he was ready for the team. I guess not this year...

He'd be long hanging fruit for Montreal, but they sent seven guys down themselves, so, wait and see I guess.

I was at the Jets/Flames game on Friday and Lomberg was the player that stood out the most to me. Seems like a good signing in what could otherwise be a long year.

Sharangovich is week-to-week, guess they have room for Honzek now!

Lanny is old but a good leader, Macinnis has a wicked slapshot, Loob, Otto, and Nieuwendyk have good skills.

Oooooops wrong year.

Good to keep the veterans around then, good presence in the room for the young kids, Theo, Jerome, Dion, etc.

The season for the AB teams starts tonight. Cgy v Van and Wpg v Edm

Could be a long year for Flames fans. Mind you, a lot of people think that they will do better than expected.

Quite a few young guys on the roster. Flames are clearly giving youth a chance. Should make for some enthusiastic play.
Lots of young hopefuls on the farm itching to be called up.

A lot of the team's success will be dependent on veterans like Kadri and Coleman continuing their play of the last couple years. There's no real stars on the Flames so they need to have every line contributing.

Watching the retool/rebuild will be interesting.

Expect to see an improved powerplay. A more successful powerplay should help make up for some of the 5v5 deficiencies.

Wow. Flames down 4-1 after the first, was not looking good.

Fought back, 5-4 lead with 7 minutes to play. Gotta say I'm surprised and impressed. Showing a lot of grit.

Wow wow wow....Zary scores a beauty to win in OT, after Canucks tied it late with goalie pulled. Crazy, great way to start the season. 6-5 final.

It had everything you wanted in a game, dirty, ruff, fight, goals, comebacks etc that’s for sure.

For sure. Wolf was great in net tonight. Huby finally earning his cheque, nice to see.

And those bottom tier Hawks had a good night too.

Nice to see Kirkland get on the board, that's kind of a feel good story.

So the day after the Jets stomped the Oilers in their home opener, I saw an article in the Edmonton Journal...and I was really hoping that this weekend's games would go just like they did. Flames 3-0-0, Oilers 0-3-0. Nice start on the season.

Must sting a bit to get beaten by those bottom tier teams like that, giving up 15 goals and scoring 3 to start the season.

Glad we won that one, it's not unusual for the Flames to lose to cellar dwellers. They can get their first point from someone else!
