I have a quarter of land that border's crown on north and west side's that I've built a small hunting cabin on. I get Wolves coming through on a regular basis and would like to start putting some snares out, especially when I retire in a year. I trapped alot when I was a kid on family farm back in the 70's but never had a permit. About 15 or 20 years ago I took a trapper education course for the hell of it. It looks like I might need to pass a test on ethical trapping as a first time trapper the way it reads in the reg.s.has anyone taken this test? I assume you do it at the fish and wildlife office?
You can take trapper course at ATA office in Westlock. However if you have records of previous trapper course taken I believe you are good to go, just need to buy annual trapper license from F&W office. PS courses also given at many other locations in Alberta by ATA, just click on ATA ad at top of this page for all necessary info. Lastly if you want to trap wolves, taking wolf trapping course would be very wise, they are very smart animals.

Ok thanks, I still have the certificate of the course I took. I've had the good fortune of growing up around some pretty good old trappers, I'll try my luck at some snare sets and maybe bait pile after the big game season.
I trap on crown land that isn’t part of any registered line. I require an annual permit. Might be worth try confirming the crown land adjacent your property isn’t part of somebody’s trap line just to be neighborly or perhaps provide additional opportunity. You may want to also look into the ungulate enhancement program as well through the ATA to give be you some additional motivation. Good luck!
