Default This is how detached from reality we have become

Is this for real? Unbelievable.
Black bear feasting on fruit trees in Canmore killed for public safety.
Town of Canmore has issued a provincial violation ticket against property owners where a bear was feeding on crabapples for several days.

Ridiculous. This should be sarcasm, a fable or a baldfaced joke, but they are dead serious. Stupid, retarded, disconnected from reality, head up their owns asses, doesn't come close to describing what this society is rapidly becoming.

Then I read the article. You guys are correct! Can you imagine a town with a law that prevents you from letting your crab apples gather on the tree or the ground? This how detached we have become. It is really sad.

Makes me see red. Feeding for days , letting the animal feel safe and they had to kill it. Im by no means an expert on relocating bears but why not a culvert trap ?

Relocating "problem" black bears almost never works, just eventually becomes a problem somewhere else. Which is why most are just trapped and shot, people just think they're relocated. In sask anyway.

It kind of makes me laugh. When I was cursed with a grizzly and wolves the fish cops are all like the grizzly and wolves have more right to be here than you or your cows. Haha part of me is all for wildlife in town. Fish cops shouldn't have shot that bear. Remember like they used to tell me. The wildlife was here first. Haha I think it's great.
Black bears are nothing. They should be happy they don't have wolves.

To bad government doesn’t treat pedos, murderers, rapists and thieves the same as the innocent black bear not hurting anyone.

dumb laws are made because of dumb people . when you live in bear country one shouldn`t need a law to make you look after your garbage or fruit .
if you have fruit trees do something with the fruit or tear them down .

Bylaw is in place, just enforce it right off the start and this bear wouldn’t have been so use to people and easy meals.

I wonder what the take would be if they had done nothing and for some strange reason someone would have been injured by said bear. I'll bet the fish cops and/or the town and property owner would have felt the same wrath of some on here, but for a different reason .

So if a bear wanders onto my property from out of nowhere and starts eating the fruit on my trees,im the one whos to blame and must be fined and have to cut my trees down. This is insanity.

If you aren’t in Canmore you can just shoot it. Done.

It’s not endangered and it isn’t a Grizzly. Pretty simple.

If you have a house, get rid of it. You are encumbering the wildlife and their property.

If I remember correctly, Revelstoke has the pick up the fruit bylaw daily and we had a lot more fruit trees than Canmore will ever have.

I cannot recall a bear being destroyed...relocated
.yes...destroyed..
No

Relocated black bears are destroyed.

It was sarcasm chuckles, we know that you know it all but I'm surprised you didn't know it was sarcasm.

Default fruit trees

this is not really a woke issue. This is a bear attractant issue. we have bear proof garbage bins. This is just another way of not attracting bears into the townsite! Now we can hunt them on the outside of town limits. What's the issue?

I have no problem with ticketing peopke for letting fruit accumulate on the ground but ticketing people for having fruit still on the tree or bush? At that point just ban fruit trees and shrubs completely. As for the bear, it did nothing wrong but its not worth the risk of someone getting injured.

Default It's the law!

Just like the citizens of Redmonton and Calgary, the people of Canmore get the government, and by extension, the bylaws, they voted for.
There is no excuse for a property owner in Canmore to be unaware of this highly publicized, and enforced, bylaw. Don't like it? Get it changed, follow the rules, or don't live there.

The bigger problem is this kind of stupid will eventually spill over to rural areas. Be vigilant! Don't let it happen to you!

It’s 50/50 if relocating is going to work. I’ve relocated griz only to have them return 2 weeks later and good luck catching them the same way a second time! Talk about fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me…Coworkers relocated a cow moose and calf 3x this summer and she kept coming back. The homing instinct on critters is strong! The key is going miles n miles away. Even 60-100 air miles a bear can return.

Not knowing what their bear management plan says I’m guessing there’s some metric for how long a bear has been in an area, what it’s doing, time of year, and estimated population in that area. Aka Science! It’s truly unfortunate because the critter is just doing what they do but If you relocate a bear that is not only habituated but food conditioned your now liable if anything happens down the road since you were aware of the problem and kicked the can down the road. Same reason it’s not smart to relocate raccoons or skunks because of the rabies vector and possibility of transmitting it to new areas inadvertently. As much as it sucks we aren’t hurting for black bears population wise. They’re doing fairly well all over NA.

In Alberta our black bear management allows any resident, with landowner permission, to harvest a black bear on private property without a license. Of course that doesn’t apply in town. But that is the management plan. That plan is used to control population and problems. We need to coexist with animals. We are part of this ecosystem as well. Part of that will require the removal of an animal. Unfortunately emotions get involved and all sense flies out of the window.
