Haha well I hope my title attracted your attention!

My question for you guys is with the coyote mating season comming around the corner do you think now would be a good time to start using the 3D coyote decoy and start doing some female howls etc?

Never used a fake decoy, female and challenge howls are most effective this time of year imo.

I've had good luck in the past using a decoy with challenge howls and female invitation howls when breeding time comes along. Had them come running right up to the decoy.

Have never personally used a decoy but I know a few who have used them with success. Coyotes are very territorial so I don't see any downfall to adding it to your set up. Let us know how it goes!

The yotes are getting closer together now. Should start up in a week, ends first week of march. (give or take a week)
Dont know if you have ever tried, or if you have access to someone who does.
But Using a dog as a decoy is good fun, pulls the yotes in real close.
Oh and let us know how your decoy works out!

Someone told me that in February when they mate their coats become rubbed and they aren't the greatest. Is this true?? I've always figured that they rub in may when the temps warm up

I thought using a live dog was illegal in Alberta.

Default Coyote Decoy

We have had limited success with a decoy. Have had everything from a could care less look at the decoy and walk on by, to coming up behind it and trying to ...... it.

A bad day hunting is better than a good day at work..
I have No idea animal it could of been.
West of you a few bear and cougar can be found, as with some wolves.
Not suggesting thats what i think it was..
Im thinking this weekend should be good, finally a little bit colder again.
I am assuming you are hunting private land?

Please show me where it is illegal to have your dog "accompany" you on a coyote stand?
Not looking for a fight but some people think they know the law while others read the Acts and regulations.
That includes uniformed personnel as well.

They can work well, one time when we were sitting over a dead pile we were just getting up and ready to leave when we saw a coyote come in and he didn't run off when he the coyote decoy even tho he most likely saw us, they can work well

Not looking for a fight here either , but check out Page 11 of most recent regs and read the disclaimer where it says that this pamphlet is not a complete listing of current Alberta hunting regulations .. A couple years ago when the use of greyhounds was banned I asked 2 different officers if that included the use of decoy dogs when hunting coyotes . Both said no use of dogs allowed , that's good enough for me . Even if they were both wrong , the fact that they are of that impression is enough reason for me to not tempt fate and try using a dog anyways.Who wants a court date to try and prove themselves innocent when it could be avoided?

I guess I'm that guy! Lol
I like my dog with me what ever I'm doing.
One or more of them come most places, even to deer / moose camp.
I don't take them on the hunt for big game, because it's not allowed, but I'm not interested in anyone's ( including uniformed officers) interpretation of the law.
I read the act and the regs (both are available online) and I would rather have a court date to educate an errant officer than leave my dog at home.
Not using him as a decoy just a companion/watch my back dog.

I believe I misspoke on my earlier post. I don't use my dog in the same way as they do it in the states. I have a 33 foot leash tied to a tree with my dog attached to it, I sit about 25 feet away from the tree which he is attached to. This gives him a 66 foot radius to walk, I sit in that radius to ensure no predators get the drop on him. So I guess he is more of a companion and a visual attractant than a "real" decoy dog.

I spoke with six fish and wildlife officers, all but one said my setup is fine, as long as he remains tethered. I took their names and numbers down in case I ever run into any issues.

Good idea to get names and numbers .. Don't misunderstand me ,I'm not trying to stir the pot , just going by what was told me by an officer I trust . I would also like to be able to do what you do cause I'm sure it would boost success . However the guy here says no , just like one of your guys did . I've chosen to live with his decision . I'd be concerned to let my dog run like those doggin callers in the States , seems a good way to get your dog chewed up and with a disease like mange or rabies . Have a good one ..

No worries, just conversation.
Yes it has boosted my success. Better be safe than risk any sort of legal ramifications. Yeah quite a few dogs have gotten chewed up pretty bad. Calls are what bring them in, the dog just takes the attention off what I may be doing.
Like wise, happy hunting.

I think this is what is being referred to. Right or wrong.

http://www.albertaregulations.ca/hun...s/genregs.html

Scroll down to big game #4. Now my question is are they saying coyote are big game? I certainly wouldn't think so. Where would you find the classifications of different animals? I am new to hunting and looking to start coyote hunting and am looking to find the requirements for me to go hunt on my brother in laws ranch. Licenseing, etc.

Thanks,

We've usually found that the first two weeks of February are OK, and after that the hides are often not so good.

I've had bitch yotes in March with beautiful coats and some with a ton of rubbing. Dominant bitch gets all the loving I bet...

I tried my coyote decoy last year in february and it didn't bring anything out, and it sure is a pain in the ass carrying it out to the set. Sure is fun scaring my cats with it though...yes, I'm that immature.
