New bushknife
With all the talk about skinning knives, I decided to get a local fella to build me a new bush knife for general purpose chopping and cutting of tree branches, etc.
I carry a small hatchet as well, but this Kukri is a bit lighter and more maneuverable in tight spots.
I watched him chop a 2X4, cut pop bottles with one slice , then slice paper and carving leather with it.
He does Damascus as well, but I chose high carbon steel for mine. I really like stacked washer handles for the way they grip when wet so went with that style of handle. The pommel and hilt were also cast by him.
Pretty nice piece!

The Gurkhas have been known to take an enemy's head off with one swipe of these things, although theirs are a bit bigger than this one!

That’s a great looking knife. One of my kids bought a kukri this spring, it seems like a handy design for a bushcraft type knife

Kind of an Arkansas toothpick with boomerang action function although I don't think I'd want to catch it on the comeback.

The design stems from about the 7th century.
This is the standard issue weapon of the famed Gurkha troops of Nepal.

If memory serves the Gurkha were used in the Falkland Islands brouhaha. Apparently they do their best work in the trenches at night.

Yes. They have served as an elite Special Force for England sincerely 1800's.
Their recruitment testing is one of the toughest in the World.
First off, you have to be born in a certain area of Nepal !

You're not supposed to put it back in the sheath without drawing blood, even if it's your own.

Not for a Kukhri , apparently for a Kirpan, I have heard for a Katana as well, but that would be a religious thing anyeay and not my religion!

I don’t have Facebook. If the maker had a web site or if an email could be provided I bet he would have more knife orders

Verry nice kukri, looks like a talented smith. How does it ballance / feel in the hands? I have wanted to love the kukri design for years and even own a few. Sadly my production made examples leave me very lackluster in the usefulness and function of the design. In my mind it would be a perfect trail maintenance tool for around the acreage and would become a well liked companion always close to hand..my reality was my kukris are terribly balanced tools that are awkward choppers and transfer an enormous amount of vibration through my chopping arm. I still think a well made kukri should be exactly what I imagine is a perfect trail companion and perhaps ill revisit the idea with a well made one rather than a "cold steel" type production model. Have you had a chance to do any real work with yours yet?

Balance is fantastic in the hand, but I have not done any teal work with it yet.
The big thing about this one is that it does not have the traditional hand/ blade geometry , so I think it will work better as a general style camp/ chopper than a fighting style weapon- which the Kukri is.
It is also a bit smaller than a traditional Kukri. I see he just did a clean up on a traditional Kukri and you can see the obvious differences in them.
I also have an authentic Kukri, although I have never used it for anything .

Thanks. I did notice a geometry difference as well as a slghtly softer belly and not quite as large a "leaf" shape in its tip. Its a really nice looking blade.

It's almost like a recurve/ kukri hybrid!

I am bumping this thread up as I have now used the Kukri on at least 5 animals , all deer.
This thing is wicked!
I first used it on a mule deer I shot with sdvc along the river, and it was in some fairly thick bush.
I used it to take out the sternum and slash some brush getting to the boat.
The critter's head came off in two swats!
This knife has proven very excellent for what it was designed for , and holds a super edge!
This is a white tail buck I took the head off using the Kukri.

That's quite amazing, Cat!
Reminds me of the slogan on one of my dad's Challenger socket set cases: "Good tools make the hands stronger".
Having a quality tool makes a huge difference.
