What's the hourly rate charged by plumbers, electricians, mechanics, etc in your neck of the woods these days?

Auto mechanic here, shops just outside edmonton are between $120 and $145 an hour , I own my own shop 30 minute east of the city and charge $100 an hour . Dealers seem to be fairly consistent around $175 an hour.

$110/hr for me, been at that rate for a year now. A plumber friend was at $120 last time we spoke on the topic when I bumped mine a year back.

I should do some calling to check rates around town, good to stay on top of the local average.

Unskilled think they are skilled have to babysit is 35.00. No. 2 son is 3rd year electrician for a big outfit and said they are hiring and firing useless guys left and right, he called it job security. Good people are worth the money, last i paid a mobile mechanic was 120, was glad he came, did great, paid him before he left.

So let me get this straight...unskilled labour shows up sober with just boots and gloves and is making $70,000/yr ($35/hr X 2000 hrs/yr). A ticketed electrician, assumed with tools makes like 100k.

Why go to school? it hardly pays.

For reference, new grad engineers (4 yr B.Sc with good summer job experience) was getting like $25/hr on staff at my last engg firm with a plan to get increases to $30/hr over the next 2 yrs, no bonus and if they stayed

Hard to encourage kids to stick with education...

Yup, construction labor rate spread is out to lunch.

I get paid within a couple dollars an hour of what I made as a ticketed tin basher to now push sand into a pit with a loader, and now I’m home every night.

I’ll add that both of these are non-union sites.

Out of the gate, going into a trade is more money for sure, but it levels off. That's same $25/hr engineering kid will be pulling $120K/yr with a few years experience, work in a warm office, and be home for dinner and on weekends.

So, ultimately, you are right ..... big companies pay fresh out school kids peanuts, but it's the long game. And more importantly, what you prefer to do, some people hate working in the office and would rather be out in the field.

More specialized field trades and engineers, of course, can make much more money. My son is a full stack developer working in the US - and fresh out of school, after only 2 years of experience, he is well over $100K (USD) .... so depends on your field really.
