In the east years ago alot of private land was donated by philanthropists to create parks for basically the poor working class who were stuck in urban centers and surrounded by private non accessible land. Now I'm going back alot of years and basically talking about northeastern united states but the same applies here today because we are headed into the same era of being urban serfs or peasants.
This Parks were created so the urban serfs could pursue outdoor activities. Natural resources were there for the people. Now these same parks are the other way around. The parks are for the wildlife and the experts that can still access them. The serfs just pay for it with taxes and don't really get any use of it.

I envision everyone that thinks this is a good idea has a life size JT poster in their bedroom, if you are not writing Danielle and your MLA right now and expressing your outrage at the lack of enforcement that got us here, are you waiting until they shutdown your road allowance for hunting, or log your favourite hunting spot, or shutdown an entire area area to protect coal miners before you do?
We are being pushed in this province, never in my 60 years of hunting and fishing have i seen the amount of closures i have seen the last few years, and they just keep coming.
I could care less about Ghost, i always thought that was where the people with learning disabilities tended to congregate and if you ever drove through on a long weekend you'd see I'm right, but, this is coming everywhere in this province.
Write your MLA's please and let them know this needs to stop.

Hey, where you the guy that shot the pumpkin filled with tannerite in the middle of the road as trucks where driving down it last year?
Draconian closure indeed…

When my kids were little and we went to town for something. There was no going home without visiting the playground in the park. I would always have to check the playground equipment for needles because the druggies also used the park and left needles, garbage behind. I'm not a university professor but isn't this the same thing? Let's close the parks in urban centers.

If you or anyone witnessed an act like this, you have the option to grab a plate # and call it in. Closing an area down doesn’t solve (or stop) an idiot problem. Stiff penalties do. So yes, this closure like others, is draconian.

Yes, sadly I guess common sense is considered a fanatical plan in today’s world… if safe to do so, grab a plate #, otherwise you can still call in with a description of the event and people. Not sure why this is so tough to grasp. Doesn’t matter where things happen, stupid people will do stupid things. No need to close things off. Just punish the idiots, not everyone. There’s obviously an agenda at play in this instance.

How many hours does it take cops to get to a home robbery in the country? The shooting community is filled with half wits unfortunately, some folks just don't care for anything but their immediate gratification.

They will get there in time to call the coroner, and identify your body, or to arrest you, if there is a deceased or wounded home invader. They won't be in time to protect you, and you aren't allowed to protect yourself., without being treated as a criminal.

Haha, I know right!? SMH. Never been a fan of communal punishment for the acts of a few idiots. Pretty simple logic - a person does wrong, that person suffers the consequences. Individual accountability, what a crazy idea…

Hey speaking of things that are tuff to grasp, do you think of the police got enough complaints of ****ty firearms users in a specific area they might talk to the local government and try to put in I dunno, a target shooting ban in a specific area?
That would be wild hey? People are just going to drive past the transalta road and do it down the trunk now. The cycle will repeat just as it was in McLean creek before this.
Have a good long weekend, time for me to get out sheeping.

Can close everything down, and people are going to break the rules. Who here thinks that whoever shot the pumpkin full of tannerite on the road is dissuaded by a "no shooting zone"??

Yikes, last reply for you. Speculating, but why wouldn’t police do police things and reprimand individual bad actors accordingly? Nah, shutting things down for everyone is just a way better solution. You’re right, what was I thinking…

The long term agenda is to shut down all lawful use of firearms, they they will have an easier time banning them.

Maybe they should just shut everything down and we could just stay home and pay taxes ?
I have lived close by for 40 years and use the area regularly.
When they forced me to pay an annual camping tax & kananaskis tax they told me it was for increased enforcement and improvements. Closing the area was not the improvement I imagined...

Some of those shooting spots are parallel to the road and the targets are close to it. You can hear rounds snap by when you drive down the transalta road and people shoot near trappers hill lodge. Now if they could put the squeeze on the illegal dirt biking quading and camping mess there might actually be hope for south ghost.

I live on the edge of the Ghost.
I belong to a range but have shot out there a few times because I could check for longer distances than my range has.
The few times I have been there it has been disgusting the trash left behind.
I have also seen Rambo want to be's and guys shooting right next to the road because they are too lazy to walk in a bit despite the road allowance restriction zone.
Its not just shooters, i have been back there on horseback and come upon abandoned campsites with the campfire still burning and the destruction to trails by ATv's despite the signs saying no offload vehicles.
Motocross bikes were a nuisance sometimes, then quads but SXS are the worst because these losers feel invincible inside their roll cage. At least on dirt bikes we knew if we fell we would get hurt. No skill in SXS, just point and shoot and yes I know horses can damage trails as well.
Flame away but I think weekend campers and off-roaders cause way more damage than shooters and they aren't all from the city. i know people from here in my area who camp and quad out there.

My $0.02
Some of you posting about this recent closure seriously underestimate the quantity of entitled slobs and violent idiots, both home grown and UN imports, that contributed to this situation. Seriously, you really have to see it to believe it.
The province refused to police the exact same problems at the Homestead Range; it was closed in 2015. IIRC The final straw was when some BTSA volunteers were either assaulted, or threatened by several firearms owners at the range.
This moved the problem to the McLean Creek area, which did see some enforcement of the rules, due to being closer to Calgary. It didn't make much difference. Just driving down the road was practically asking to get hit. So, shortly thereafter the no target shooting within 1km of any trail rule was put in place.
Since none of them wanted to carry their junk that far, they started driving out to the Ghost to continue being slobs and idiots. With less enforcement due to the greater distance, not only were they more ignorant, they were more willing to be aggressive.
Now the Ghost area is closed to shooting.
I expect Hunter Valley will be next.

Woke government has promoted everything that years ago we considered to be bad, they now promote as good. Drugs and everything else nasty is all part of normal society to the point we have to many bad guys amount us. Now they want to take away everybody's rights and freedoms because society has tanked so bad that apparently to many of us are now low life scumbags so for our own good we have to disarm everyone. People should just pay taxes and if they need intertainment watch Olympics on tv.
Trash and needles in public parks but they will never be closed down. Go after the law abiding gun owner.
Owning a rifle is the same as owning a truck. If you can't ever drive the truck you won't have the skills to drive a truck.

I know it's not Ghost but this is what people are up against, from a trail riding site on Facebook.
Anyone else been riding at messa Bute over the weekend and have issues with people shooting guns close to you. Exactly here! Marked on map with white circleas we had to turn around very quickly. People were on the gravel road shooting towards us. Is this legal in this area? I don't think they saw us. Just think they were shooting to shoot guns. Which I'm not against, I just want to not ride and become a target!

Would need to have more info on that instance.
Would agree with him in some circumstances.
Were they shooting targets with a backstop behind?
Were they shooting with no backstop towards the bush without scouting for quad/hiking trails in the background?

I go out to ghost. I think this is maybe the place I used to shoot at. over the last few years its degraded massively. the last time I went out there, there was plastic plates cups garbage beer cans. some people had even been shooting glass bottles a full filing cabinet. nobody ever picks up their brass or removes the targets or stuff they brought in to shoot. loads of wood and paper and plastic getting blown around.
canada is stunningly beautiful I just have no clue how people can do this. honestly I was disgusted by the state of it the last time I were out there. people should be held accountable. I spoke to a fish and wildlife guy once in that area about a year ago and he said we are keeping a close eye on this area now because of how it's gone down hill. I feel like its everyone campers shooters etc but it mainly looks like shooters because of all the targets and shells lying around.

Just waiting to see what “special interest group” takes credit for the shutdown. How long do you think it’ll be before camping & ATV/offroad use is next?

If the fine for littering there was $2500, and they paid $1000 rewards for turning in offenders, it would likely reduce the problem. $1000 would bring out some bounty hunters.
