22.250 is a great yote gun... anything less is not fair to the critter.

I've shot a few coyotes with a .22. In my opinion you can do it but it is basically just cruel. Now I shoot em with my '06 or .7 mm, now those calibers kill em. If you spine em it just about cuts em in half so shoot two and use one for a patch if you are worried about fur.

if your 'hunting' coyotes, calling them in, to no more than 150yds, plan on a broadside vitals shot and are prepared to let it go as opposed to taking a marginal shot, then a 17hmr will do fine. it drops coyotes dead, i would not hesitate to shoot a wolf either.
13 for 13 yotes so far=one shot each

if you are just 'killing' preds then use a centerfire.

Default 17 hmr

I guide waterfowl in sept an oct an my 17 sits on the seat beside me every mile I drive..in the 4 yrs I've ha this gun I've killed well over 100 coyotes an a dozen foxes with it.running, sitting whatever Ive killed em.had many drop dead an many run 50 yards an pile up.90 percent have been under 100 yards but I did kill one at 184 yards.I couldn't believe it so I burned back to camp an got my range finder to go back an range his scraggily carcass..fluke?!!hell ya cause I haven't hit one over 150 since that day.but it killed him.so don't go saying 17s are not good enough to kill coyotes with cause you don't know what yur talking about.

Hey
I love my 17 but in my opinion just a bit to small for yotes if they are out over 100 yrds. That is the total reason I bought my 204.

Centerfire for yotes, Rimfire for prairie dogs. I like the 22-250 but the 223 is a bit more economical. Lots of good options. The .17 and 22LR for close range only <100yrds.

A lot of fun can be had shooting long range Centerfires at prairie dogs too. Helps to build/maintain some shooting skill.
