We also use these plastic traps inside garage etc. They are easier to wash and don't have as many false set offs as the old wood versions. Easier to set as well.

I put these under our vehicles as mice crawl up the tires into the eng compartment and chew on stuff. Catch mice everyday with these. These traps are so good they even kill chipmunks. Killed three chipmunks this summer with these traps.

The plain victor wood traps work well for me. Have a couple of cats that come and do mouse hunting in my yard . Come spring and summer the garter snakes come out. Seem to be less mice around with snakes.

Aside from traps, poison, and cats, keep the place cleaned up and the grass all cut short. Makes a big difference on the mouse population

Yeah I have been working on that, we just moved in and some areas definitely needed attention. While mowing I found a nest full of baby mice, dog ate them all before I could stomp them lol. Also found a snake, good population of snakes in the yard which is good.

Snakes are good! I like them.

Luckily the mice are not in the house but notice them around the yard and sheds so want to start getting rid of them. I will be trying that bucket method as soon as the parts come in

I noticed the same thing about keeping the grass short. I guess they like having a cover, and go where it's present.

Absolutely. I was confused why all my water traps stopped catching any mice. Least Weasel started living in our woodpile, I think I catch a handful of mice a month now.

Doesn’t help the OP but just a note. If you catch a mouse on a glue trap in the house and your wife wakes you up to “deal with it” don’t just kill the mouse and throw the whole glue trap on the deck if you have cats....sticky things and you will have a glue trap stuck to your cat.

We had a heck of an issue with mice last year in our garden. They were eating the peas, zucchini, tops of the carrots, etc. We ended up getting two female kittens in November from some friends, planning to spay them come spring as they were quite young. Spring rolls around and, you guessed it, both of them are pregnant. 11 kittens later, we finally got them spayed. They have been doing an outstanding job of cleaning out the mice around here. I've seen them catch 2-4 per day for a week straight. No more mouse problems in the garden either.

So my vote is for cats, but get them fixed unless you want to be dealing with kittens every few months.

We have 2 weasels hanging around the scrap wood pile. Only downside is that the wood pile is next to the chicken coop...

Bucket trap was mentioned here.... Inside buildings I made them & put 3-4 inches of used motor oil in them so they work year round.
1-2 times a year I put the oil (and dead Mice) into my burn barrel (No neighbors).

They work great ! Peanut butter evenly around the can.

Coat hanger.

Drill 1/8" hole through pail edge & though the CENTER of the can.

Slid coat hanger through both & bend ends down.

Oil.

Coat can with PB.

Ramp & put next to a wall / out of the way.

Saw a video where a guy put a large bucket small trash can and blew up a balloon that filled it out from side to side snugged up right. Then placed grab around the edges.

Mice climbed up a couple runways and then started piling up on the balloon and eventually the balloon popped and all mice fell into the bottom of the bucket.

I wish I had a ton of mice to test that on. It was interesting.

In my experience after a long lengthy battle with the little critters, the final solution was 1 female cat, went to signs zero in less then 2 weeks!

We have 3 cats here and 3 dogs, in the summer the cats keep the mice population down, but in this cold or any cold, only mouse traps here, our mice like peanut butter, but they like it off the traps, so now I use hot glue to keep my fruit loop there, now the mice needs to stay there and chew and chew, and what do you know, one dead mouse in the trap, we use the victor plastic pedal model, more square cm to walk on, and snap, great sound when watching tv later in the day when the mice like to leave there hiding spot.

Tin cats. They hold several mice and you don't have to check or rest them for
weeks.

Find out which cavity nesting owls frequent your area, and build a few nest boxes. If you convince a pair to move in, you're all set. Saw-whet owls are fairly common, tolerate people well, and feed their families on mice & small birds. Kestrals use artificial nest boxes too - and are great mousers. Just don't use poison if these great predators are around.

Leave out the oil, and you have a 'live bait box' for bullies & pike ! I knew farmers in Ontario that would use them for pike & muskies. Use a fat elastic band to hold them on to a long shank treble, cast them into the lily pads, and watch them swim back.

If you are going to go the poison route, do yourself a favour and get the potent stuff from a licensed exterminator. I go to eco pest in Edmonton and it’s $10 for a bait station and $5 for a bait block. The bait stations are refillable so it’s a one time cost. I fill all mine once in the spring and once in the fall and rarely see signs of mice.

With the Canadian tire stuff I was going through a block of poison every couple days, I’m pretty sure I was just feeding them not poisoning them. They are dead within a couple of days of eating the exterminator grade poison, so you don’t go through nearly as much.
