As I recall from the story, they said that the bear had been hanging around his place for a few days. However, there was no mention that he had called Fish and Wildlife to report it as a problem, although he apparently did call them AFTER he shot the bear.

What an idiot! His property? I'm sorry, animals were here first. It's their land. We are using it.

Who are you Charles Darwin? Animals were here first? What a stupid statement.

It's pretty tough when acreages, urban sprawl get into adjacent areas where wildlife live. Wildlife is nice to see, but can be an issue (as in the case of big predators).

It's similar to out Edmonton river valley system, and particular to the area I live (Wolf Willow) and the coyotes have lost ANY and ALL fear of man. When a coyote COMPLETELY ignores you when you are 30m away (like on my next door neighbour's front lawn), That's a problem waiting to happen.

Coyotes have taken dogs, cats in the neighbourhood and it's going to be someone's grade one kid at a bus stop next.

Harmony and all that nice, pleasant, and fairy-tale coexistence will disappear when that story goes down and you read that story in the headlines.

I think wild animals need a healthy fear of humans. That's the issue in my opinion.

What a load of crock! I see someone's smoking the new stuff.

We all share. We don't get to wipe them out just because, but neither do they get to kill a guy's kid just because they now want to squat his driveway. Give and take here.

Whitetail too? Give your head a shake.
Guy has had few days to deal with a problem bear. He went out to shoot a bear, that was not even attacking his dogs. My best defence, and they have done it in few times in my remote Coast cabin, are my KBDs. https://www.king5.com/article/tech/s.../281-569348076

Yep 4 kids and a wife. And I wouldn't be raising them in Bella Coola. Clearly you don't know much about the area.... it's grizz central. They are part of the urban population there regardless how we feel about it. And it's not going to change any time soon.

Lol , the guy thought he would run off a momma grizz with cubs by running towards it ? Then he wounds it ? The distance looked to be about 17 feet when he shot it and at the 38 sec mark of the video there appears to be smoke coming from the wad in the bears leg. The bird shot would likely have still been in the wad so it would have acted as a slug more than pellets . That bear was hit hard . Depending on the leg wound, ie. broken bones and or infection it might not be able to feed itself or travel like it needs to , maybe a cripple from now on .. so it is very possible it will have more interactions with humans .

A grizzly bears first reaction to a direct threat is almost always a charge , the charge may or may not result in a physical encounter . Still can't believe the gun ran toward a momma griz with cubs .. idiot

Not possible, people in Canada believe that Canadians should live in harmony with Nature even if the humans get mauled and eaten wild life.

Hopefully though, those said Canadians experience Natural Selection.

Default grizz

Many Trappers and prospectors shot numerous problem grizz with bird shot as all they had to protect themselves. However we all can learn from this grizz attack. Final point is could of had one or two bird shot shells to try scare off bear, but should of had last 4 as slugs to properly deal with potential charge.

Thumbs down

Killing a dangerous predator in defense of your life is completely acceptable. Going out to confront a dangerous predator, then intentionally wounding it and not following up with a kill shot should be grounds for charges to be laid. Endangering wildlife maybe?
He was carrying what appeared to be Marine Defender and admitted he knew about the bear in the area; so he had time to prepare. In that situation, who goes after a sow Grizzly with cubs with #6 target loads of dubious quality? He was lucky.
It is good that he was OK and his family is safe, but now someone else will likely have to deal with that wounded bear.
