Here I thought you were an okay guy. YOU LET THEM LIVE!!!!!

Magpies are nothing more then very large house flies. They serve no useful purpose in the world, they spread disease, they kill, torture and maim for entertainment AND they are UGLY.

Moreover, there is evidence to suggest that they are reincarnated pedophiles.

Good job to those killing magpies this year.
It takes quite a bit of skill to stalk around the neighborhood with a pellet gun never mind actually killing one, and disposing of it from a neighbors backyard.

I need to get some traps going.

Seen 4-5 new-B's that must of just left the nest in the Red Deer Costco parking lot today ... wish I had my 2240 .... there would of been a few less "Flyin-Rats" in Ab.

I am frankly surprised at the anger and hatred displayed in this thread toward the noble and elegant Magpie.
And here I thought I was the only one.

Just missed some fledglings that were hopping around 37th Street SW the other day. I was sure that between my van tires and the wider trailer axles I had a good chance as they were lined up right in my path.

The one I built is here, it works very well:

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/%24depar.../all/agdex3496

In consultation with TreeGuy I found that the trapped magpies could be made less 'chattery' by including somewhere inside for them to roost. A couple of pieces of rebar poked through the holes offering a few perches can keep them more calm. This is helpful if you leave the trap set while you're away from home, it will help keep your neighbors from having to weather the racket until you can offer the birds some Nytol.

when I was a kid/ teenager I never saw magpies or crows in the city, now they are every where and that loud squaking drives me a little crazy some times.. FS

For those of you that have built the chicken wire mesh trap. How big do you make the entry hole into the trap?

I have been watching the magpies chase away all the good song birds in our yard and my pellet gun does not have enough jam to put one of those annoying buggers down. Trap time

I'll have to measure the opening in mine, it's an effective size. I think I might have had one escapee as a captive count seems to have reduced one time, though that could also have been an optical illusion if I has counted one that was on the far side but outside of the trap. Its close to 4.5" -5" I'd say by memory, the things need to duck to get in which assists the optical illusion in them not seeing how to get out. On my trap the entrance funnel is 2/3 on the exterior. I bait the inside with lots of fast food scraps and even foil burger wrappers for visual punch and then place a bit outside of it to functions as the proverbial trail of breadcrumbs to lead them in. I've had as many as 7 in it at once. Mine is about 46" diameter in 1" galv welded mesh

Magpie traps works great as described. I have a tough time killing them myself although I do it anyways. They're pretty smart and kinda pretty in their jet black/ blue suit. Can't stand my garbage being raided though and of course the murder of the songbirds. Very shrewd birds that have my respect (and resentment). Much like a coyote for me. I'll shoot em like anyone else but there are times I let em walk out of pure respect.

I'll add that my trap is available for pro bono loan to AO members in and near Calgary. I don't have it in perpetual use, its just for when the things are being particularly pesky & vocal

According to some of you guys if we didn't eliminate the magpie the song birds would become extinct. Seems to me the magpie is just a good garbage cleaner and as you know the city is full of trash. We have more song birds than ever out here and 2 nests of magpies within 50 yards of the house. Shot 30+ gophers on the South side of the yard the other evening and who do you suppose was first to go clean them up?

Had to shut the window last night as the cackling was so bad. 6 of them had a crow in a tree and were really giving it the gears. Wanted so bad to bring out the Remmy 870 but the neighbours wud probably have issue with that living in town and all. There is no way i would take the time to live trap these bastards and relocate them. can't believe the amount of them and how much their population has increased ...

That is why you live trap them and SSS or stuff them through the window to your neighbours house

We find the crows are just as noisy. Can magpie traps work for larger crows?

I honestly can't recall if I had one in mine or not. There were certainly some on top of it observing the trapped magpies though. The entrance hole would need to be enlarged, and perhaps they could better figure the way out than the magpies can. On my trap I set the funnel wires so that they can be bent to shrink or enlarge the entrance, rather than simply cutting it to one size.

I have a hate for them because in our last place we lived we used to have all kinds of little songbirds visit daily. Magpies moved in and I watched them try and get at the nests, chase and attack small birds etc. Within 2 weeks all the good birds were driven away.
Who do you suppose was the culprit?

Id rather have songbird than those stupid squawking magpies at my window at 6am

So survival of the fittest doesn't work anymore? Maybe that's why civilization is in a downward spiral.

I believe, It's illegal to discharge a fire arm within city limits. And by definition, I also believe bb guns fall under this...

Am I wrong?
