I just got back from Edmonton now.

The family is overwhelmed by the support. Thank you so much everyone. Tears in my eyes when I see kindness like this shown by total strangers.

Latest update is they are operating on his lungs tomorrow and they are putting in stints around his collar bone and neck. Then radiation starts on Wednesday.

Batman dropped in for a visit, which really lifted his spirits.
Now however, visitors are being limited. Too dangerous to catch any viruses. Pretty much just family, and have to be completely healthy, wear masks and wash hands thoroughly.

Thanks Zip.

A better explanation of exactly what the little guy has, has been posted up. I'll quote it, as it does a better job than I could do explaining.

Quote:
April Johnson is a mother of two small children, Irene (age 8) and Thomas (age 5). They lost their dad and husband two years ago to cancer. After his death, April became a bus driver for children with special needs. This allowed her to balance single parenting with work. This is a giant feat for any single parent.
Recently, Thomas developed an ear infection that wouldn’t respond to antibiotics. It burst his ear drum, doing damage to many other parts in his ear, which has rendered him deaf in that ear and paralyzed the left side of his face. He was promptly admitted to the Children’s Hospital for further testing. Thomas was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma; a growing cancerous tumor between the muscle tissues behind his ear. As of this week, it is being treated with both chemo and radiation.
While this is occurring, April’s family and friends have rallied behind her to help look after Thomas at the hospital and Irene at home. But the longer term financial support is needed to pay rent, house bills, fuel and groceries as a leave of absence is necessary to care for Thomas in the hospital.
Please consider donating. Your generosity is most appreciated.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts

Just opened this thread... sad.

Prayers for Thomas and his Family...We went through C scare with my Granddaughter almost five years ago. Moral support From AO Forum has helped all of us a lot.
I hope everything will be well.

Andrew

F cancer, what a terrible hand they have been dealt. Words fail to describe the fear a parent feels when innocent kids are attacked by it.

Thank you for asking Andrzej.
Thomas went for surgery on wednesday to put a main line into his chest that is supposed to come out today. They also are doing another biopsy on a node in his lung.
His Mom says she can tell he's scared of all the IV's and all the needles. He just wants to come home.
She's been at the hospital everyday and Thomas' sister Irene has been back and forth with friends and family. It's taking a toll on her as well.

Wishing this family all the best
Hoping more people can chip in and help this lady . Cancer can drain a persons savings fast. Living expenses , travel expenses back and forth to the hospital ( is it the tom baker ? ), extra meds and pain killers that may not be covered, and the list goes on .

Update for Monday, February 15, 2016:

Quote:
Thomas will be starting his chemo today and then in 2 weeks he will be starting radiation. He can't go back to school for a year as his treatments are 42 weeks long with breaks. We get to find out Wednesday if he gets to be an out patient but will still have to go back everyday this is where the long roads starts for him
A fighting Chance For Thomas

I would like to donate, been down in the US trying to get my own boy the life saving treatment he needs, but I got some extra tucked away.
Can I EMT it, if so ease PM me.
Time to get this rolling, Suffield had more pages than this!
Folks have been generous to my son and we need to help this family out, my son would want that.

Just wanted to update. First of all, thank you to yet ANOTHER AO member, FullCurlEarl, who's helped this family (and trusted me with his donation) . I'm continually amazed at the camaraderie shown by our members. Not only for support in situations like this, but support for, really, what amounts to strangers. And to trust each other like we do.

Okay, so GREAT news for the family is Thomas is able to continue his 42 week treatments as an outpatient, which means he can be home now!! Still has daily visits to the hospital. Mom has taken a "leave of absence" from her work as a bus driver for disabled people.
She told me that when Thomas got home he cried, he was so happy. He's still very susceptible to diseases, so strict visitor rules apply. (No colds or flues, masks, etc). But being able to be home to fight this battle is huge for a little guy like this.

Thank you Again AO!!

A Fighting Chance for Thomas
