I think your question is mis-worded. I believe everyone here will agree that family vacations are worth it. But the true question is is a family vacation cruise down to the states worth it. This is truly one only you and your wife can answer. It all depends on your particular financial position. And on your outlook in life. Some are savers and get upset when cash is spent that doesn't earn money. Others spend it quick before it's gone.
For me, one of your comments is how I view things. I will enjoy my life today. I will save for retirement and later costs in life, but I will enjoy myself today as well. My wife and I took our two boys on a Carribean cruise with an add-on three day stay in San Juan over Christmas a few years back. And it cost us right around that $10k mark. Was it worth it? Absolutely. We had a blast. But we are in a financial position where spending this amount of cash on a vacation does not hurt us. Earlier in our life we would go on family vacations that were simply camping. Maybe $2k. Or less, depended if we took the trailer or not.
A cruise is expensive. If you are in a position to handle it financially, then I believe it is worth it. But family vacations are the best. But they don't have to cost $10k to qualify. One of the most memorable trips my two boys remember is a quad trip into the mountains for a couple of nights. Cost was about $400.
Absolutely you should do the family vacation. You and your wife have to decide if a Cruise is worth it.
