One thing I have found that has helped in rural locations is to turn off the LTE and stick with 3G. You won't get the "blazing fast" LTE data speeds (but you likely won't with 1 bar of LTE service anyways) but by turning it off you allow the phone to stick to the lower frequency 3G carrier signal to preserve call stability.

Phones for some reason love to hang into even a crappy LTE signal even if the available 3G service is very strong - because its all about the speed, even when it isn't there.

The people with Rogers have seldom been able to get any reception any distance from major centres, while the Telus customers were almost never unable to connect. I don't know much about it other than reception experience, as recent as last summer. If you don't ever want to use the phone in "the boonies", then just look for the best deal that fits your use. If you do, then currently at least, you are far better off with Telus.
That's been my experience as well. All our remote cell modems for monitoring equipment are on Telus.

+1 on that. Also, you can get 3G boosters (12V) for around $100 these days, they make a pretty big difference

The answer is simple BLACKBERRY. By far and away the best cell phone reception. We were fishing today for trout in a small lake that was in a very low lying area surrounded by tall trees and you may guess what I am about to tell . The Blackberry had 4 bars the I Phone had 1 and a half bars of reception. I have owned blackberries since their inception and have a loyal following due to their excellent reception as I to use my Blackberry as a phone communicator first and an online appliance second.
