Highschool hunting trip--> Need donations

OP since you have binos on the way is there anything else you need?

These programs are great. Like I said my jr sr high-school did them and they were great.

I met treeroot this past spring to drop off a couple taxidermy mounts. Stand up guy and had a good visit. If I had a spare set of binoculars, I would donate them in a heartbeat.

I edited that post about who this was supporting after getting more information and I have had significant interaction since. The issue you are alluding to IS NOT GERMANE. If it was I would not be donating to the cause. This thread has had enough oversight and investigation for me to say that the OP is a great guy, very well focused and doing far more than 99.9% of others. His level of dedication and the work he is doing is not surpassed by anyone I know of.

I donate signifcant money to a lot of outdoor causes and I am very proficient at investigating the folks asking for donations. Support him or not, that is your choice but his motivation, dedication and drive to do the right thing are not in question in my mind and I am a pretty tough hurdle to get past. I would not be donating if I was not 100% convinced.

I am fine with guys choosing not to donate, I am NOT FINE WITH ANYONE QUESTIONING THE OPS MOTIVATION OR DEDICATION.

Just an update.

I took the class on an overnight survival camp in mid October. In their small groups they had to make shelters out of tarp/rope to sleep in for the night. In their groups they had to cook for their group, cut their fire wood (yes kids used the ax), make fire using no lighter or matches etc…. They also had the opportunity to walk trails for grouse and hare. Me and my teaching partner were the only ones who were allowed to shoot this year, but we carried a 20 gauge and got a grouse with the kids. I was happy with one grouse because our upland population is very low here this year. One bird was a win. It only got to -1 on the trip. I was hoping for colder to put them through a harsher experience, but I cant expect perfect. Last year it got to -18 over night when I took my class. They earned their survival and cooking credits on that trip.

I just took out a small group from my class on a deer hunt tonight. I showed them how to grunt and rattle as they sat behind a makeshift blind I built. They didn’t make a sound or move for the last 2 hours of day light during an our sit. I saw a white tail flip up about 10 feet inside the tree line, but that’s the only action we saw. The field we have access to does not have much for feed (cut oat field) so there isn’t a lot of residential deer aorund, but I was hoping to catch a rutting buck cruising through. I only had a handful of kids able to go tonight, so each kid got their own set of binos for the night. They really helped becusse the tree line is 250-350 yards from where the blind is. I was sincerely impressed with how quiet and still the kids were behind the blind. Before we walked to the blind I told them “have you ever seen the movie “bird box”, well that’s what deer hunting is like”.

We will go out a couple more times to get a whitetail. I’m sure we will manage something.

The deer have just started feeding behind our school in the last period of the day, so we are going to use the binos to watch the deer tomorrow instead of class work. The rut is full swing here so I’m hoping the kids can rattle a buck in behind the school. Can’t shoot a firearm behind the school becusse it’s within town limits otherwise it would be a great place to take them hunting

We have accessed Cabelas grants. I got 800$ grant last spring. I bought campign stuff, replenished our fishing rod supply and fishing lures etc..

When I got the grant, I did not know we would be hunting this year.

My teaching partner got a cabelas grant in the past for a few thousand dollars. I think 3k? He used it to start the initial fishing program we do.

It's crazy how much fishing gear you go through when you supply every kid a school fishing rod spooled with school fishing line and school fishing lures. Take 25 kids casting for pike from shore in the spring for a week and you blow through a few hundred bucks quite easily. Most kids are beginners, so lots of lost lures and always a couple rods get toasted lol..


I will give Cabelas a LOT of credit. That "round up for kids outdoor programs" is awesome. I am certain they told me every cent gets donated.

The lady told me I can apply every 2 or 3 years. She also said how much you get is bascically calculated by taking the total money donated to cabelas and dividing it by the number of applicants they approve. So if only 2 applicants meet the critera and they raise 10k, each applicant gets 5k.

Cool and very creative program if you ask me.

I've been doing outdoors programs in schools for over 15 years. I've found a few ways to raise the money to make them happen. One year a pipeline was being put through lac la biche. I talked to them and they happily agreed to pay for busing for me to take 6 elementary classes ice fishing for a week. I send LOTS of emails and fill out lots of applications to make stuff happen.

I'm taking my next term's wildife class on a over night camping/fishing trip to Grist lake in March for some lake trout. I can't recall the lodge name off the top of my head, but they cut me a huge deal for 4 cabins for the kids. Never hurts to ask. I will find out the lodge name because the only way I could swing that trip is because of the deal they gave us.


Not a lot of people understand how school programs get funded. Public schools simply don't have the money to run great programs like my outdoor ed programs. You have to get creative and be willing to spend hours filling out applications for grants, calling asking for donations, calling places and asking if they can give you a deal because its for a school program etc.

Alberta actually puts the least amount of money into education of all the provinces. I know ppl don't like paying taxes (neither do I), but some tax dollars are well spent.
