why do they force you to belong to a gun range anyway?

Because if you own a restricted weapon you need a reason. Usually it is either to collect or to use....if you declare you target shoot, then they want proof by requesting a range membership from an approved range. You can only use a restricted weapon at an approved range....so it's a chicken or an egg thing.

In Edmonton you have "Edmonton Shooter's Guild" can be purchased out of Phoenix for $30/year. Doesn't give you range access but you can own restricted.

There is also
Wabamun Range @ $100/year
CHAS @ $160/year (need a sponsor)
