I doubt that's accurate. I can't see manufactures putting a bunch of extra equipment in vehicles for free if the subscription isn't purchased. You're likely paying for it, whether you use it or not, then paying more if you actually use it.

Grand Cherokee, by far the best vehicle especially 4x4. Last Cherokee went 20 years and 400KM. Only repair was fuel pump and fan relay. Just change oil and buy few tires. My wifes new Cherokee Real 4x4 has skid plates, tow hooks and get upto 8.5 liters/100km. No Ford or GM product can beat that at cost of less than $40K.

My Tacoma just finished its 1 year free subscription. I now pay $10/month for auto start, control door locks etc. Pretty expensive for sure but I like having it as an app on my phone so i can start it from across town or unlock/lock my doors from work etc....
OP I was somewhat in the same boat as you and I chose Toyota. Its tried and true technology. Ultimately having a long lasting reliable vehicle was more important to me than fancy gadgets.

Not to derail, but why would you want to start your car from across town?

It cheaper for the manufacturer to install all new vehicles with one technology package. In fact, vehicles "without navigation" often times simply already have that capability.
In terms of having the option to decline the subscription - we bought 2 new vehicles last year (Toyota 4runner and GMC Sierra) and did not subscribe. There is no obligation in either case and there aftermarket options for both. You are not forced to do anything.
If you want it, pay up, if you don't want to pay, cool, you don't get it. Easy Peasy. This is such a non-issue the way I see it.

You'll finally get a heated steering wheel with the 4runner, you'll have to push down on the pedal to get it to move, depending on trim level they all ride differently, 4runner for life for me...because at the rate these things have gone up who can afford another any other questions pm me

I don't know about "across town" if you live in the city.
In my case, when my plane lands in the airport, and it's winter, I'm command starting my truck as we are taxiing to the gate so it nice and warm when I get there.

I know you said you wanted 4x4, but I'm a big fan of the BMW X3 and X5. Our X3 is the best vehicle I have driven on snow/ice and the all-wheel drive is great. Fuel mileage varies between 7.5-8.5l per 100km in eco mode. I test-drove an Explorer and the X3 and the build quality of the BMW sold me. I was willing to step down in size to get a better-built vehicle for the same price.

The couple of times were just ‘nice to haves’. My hunting partner and I separated on a cold day. He got too cold and headed back to truck. He texted once there. I unlocked and started truck for him to warm up while I was still up hunting in the coulees.
Other was on a -30 day and truck wasn’t plugged in so I started every few hours from across town. I don’t believe you can do that in Edmonton though.
I’ve used the door lock feature a few times too when I just simply forgot to lock it.

All three heads up reasons- no idling bylaw in YYC though see more than a few vehicles chugging with nobody in them. Thnx for answering.
Gotta wonder how insurance would deal on a claim if thugs stole remote started vehicle via the app.

There is no "anti-idling bylaw" for passenger vehicles in Alberta, only commercial.
Edmonton has one for passenger vehicles above 0c.

To Buy or not to Buy?
Great video at the start of this post
I believe that the most expensive thing about vehicle ownership is Maintenance
That said, now I'm on my third Toyota and I would like to but another but there is no reason as its still going strong LOL
My 2 cents

100%, I bought a cheap Hyundai brand new thinking I was getting a deal. Well the tires need replaced every 40-60000km's because of the stupid suspension setup on the rear of the vehicle. The oil needs changed every 5000km because it get fuels in it from the GDI fuel setup. And even with the religious oil changes the engine still blew up at 172,000km because of a faulty rod bearing. Making matters worse was the fact that the car burnt oil and clogged the catalytic converter at 160,000kms.
Buy a good quality vehicle where you can get 300,000kms with basic maintenance and you're golden.

4 runner
WE just got back from Vegas & I rented a 2021 explorer for 2 weeks. Biggest POS I've driven, it sounded like the quarter panels were going to fly off once we hit 35MPH. The scariest thing was when it lit up and slammed on the brakes with no one in front of me & said something to the effect of "warning front accident avoidance". Luckily the guy behind me wasn't too close so I didn't get rear ended.
I would take a Toyota any day of the week personally

Rental vehicles are treated like crap. Good possibilities that it had front end damage and was covered up. Happens lots with those.

We had a 2020 explorer for a few years. fords 4auto driveline I liked it more than a car/suv awd. It drives totally different. More like a truck
Was a very comfortable vehicle got 8.5-9.5L/100 for mileage,
It was too big for my wife she prefers 5 seaters so when it went in for a warranty update and electrical issue with the screen we switched it out for a ford edge. Trade in was 4000 less than we paid and she is way happier with the smaller suv.

I don't know of anyone, nor have I ever heard of someone actually getting a ticket for warming up their vehicle. Never. Maybe it's a law, but if it is, I'm ignoring it.
As far as someone stealing your vehicle while it's remote started, the doors are locked, and without the key fob the vehicle won't go into gear anyways - so it's no easier to steal (compared to it not being started) - so this is a non-issue.
The other part of the equation is simple - I don't volunteer any more information than I have to - especially to crooked companies like insurers. Any excuse they have not to cover you, they will try and weasel out of the coverage you paid for - pure crooks.
The bottom line is - They would have no way of knowing if your vehicle was started, or not, locked, or not - so unless you are stupid enough to give them excuses to screw you by yapping - they need to fulfill their obligation to you and cover you.

Well now you have:
<Now, the City of Edmonton has handed out its first tickets for excessive idling in a residential neighbourhood.
Recently, Edmonton enforcement officers issued two violation tickets, each with a $250 associated fine, according to Ryan Pleckaitis, head of Edmonton bylaw enforcement.
The bylaw prohibits any “nuisance,” including the production of offensive odors or smoke, both of which were alleged by neighbours of a man who they claimed lets his diesel truck idle for up to 20 minutes at a time, which they said fills their home and vehicles with carcinogens.>

Underlined: My Co worker put his manual transmission Tacoma into neutral, engaged the parking brake to later fire it up remotely (doors locked). A dirtbag bricked out the passenger window and drove off with it.
Bolded: Used to be if you got your vehicle stolen you'd have to file a stolen vehicle report first or your insurers won't honor your auto theft claim-so if your telling the truth they're going to know if your rig was started, locked, unlocked or whatever.

I guess the thief that stole his truck so easily must have had a way to unlock the steering wheel lock mechanism and/or also was able to somehow trick the proximity ignition relay to allow the vehicle to operate and continue running without the fob there ............ so I'm guessing this thief was already prepared to do that anyway.
Bottom line is the same - command start is not going to necessarily make your vehicle easy to steal. And thieves who have the knowledge and tools to take your vehicle will do with or without your command start being on or off anyways. I'm not sure I'd say or agree that the command start here made this much easier for the thief.

I took my command start out so that if it ever got stolen, it wouldn’t be warm and toasty for them.
Screw them.

A couple articles dispelling the myth that a command starter makes your vehicle easier to steal ...
https://www.audiomotive.com/how-a-re...vehicle-theft/
https://www.mobileedgeonline.com/can...emote-started/
If thieves have a tool (a programing device to override your proximity fob security) they can steal your vehicle, but this would essentially be no different between it being started or if they hit the push button to start it. Either way, the point is they need the device, and command start does not make it any harder (or easier). This article talks about the disadvantages of the "push button" versus a traditional physical key (which does require something to physically engage and unlock the steering column).

We test drove a Forerunner and an Explorer sport model yesterday. The Explorer drove like a Corvette and the Forerunner is like a truck and honestly a little under powered. If we lived in town, ever planned on towing anything or traded vehicles every couple of years, the Explorer would be the clear winner. Explorer is on the lot and we'll wait 6 months for a Forerunner. Because we live in a rural area and keep our vehicles for a long time, we're leaning towards the Forerunner.
Sales manager at Toyota told us the Forerunner model upgrade would be a year behind the Tacoma.
On a side note, what did Marky Mark say to get himself banned?

I think you made a great choice, NCC. I would take a ForeRunner over an Explorer as well.

Just curious, what kind of mileage are you getting from the Edge? Is that with the 2.0 Ecoboost?

Another 4Runner vote here. Yes, it’s underpowered. Yes, it sucks gas. Can it circumnavigate the world? Probably. I have a 2014 SR5 premium. Didn’t want the KDSS, and it had 7 seats as opposed to the TRD off-road which only came with 5 seats. Hwy driving in it isn’t too bad. Usually get 12 per 100 driving to Vancouver fully loaded.

Definitely agree with this. Two Toyotas in a row, both new model years. No issues.
To the OP, I didn't think it was possible to go from a Toyota to another brand.
