Just throwing this out there, but with all the AO members here that really enjoy a good whisky, I'm wondering if we shouldn't institute an annual AO whisky tasting? Maybe have it in Edmonton (as it is central, and if I'm going to vomit I can't think of a better place. )....Maybe do it on the spring Equinox, in March? The details we could work out, but is there any interest? I see a weekend event, with some fine whisky, good meals, and lots of good times.

Haha! My dad was a scotch drinker... loved it...my mom not so much. She always said that scotch tastes like perfume smells. Whatever that means.!!

I'm thinking this event could be done in all major centres. Heck, I'd even host Lethbridge! In the mean time, I think I'll get cracking on a few new bottles I have sitting on the bar! Pics to come. Also, I am a big fan of the Glenlivet Nadurra's. There are 3 to choose from I believe; The Oloroso Matured, Peated Whiskey Cask Finish, and the First Fill. All wonderful and different charactertistics. Around $80 per bottle. Enjoy!

Just picked up a bottle of Talisker 10yr single malt. I tend to drink whisky but branching out into scotch with a few affordable drams.

IF I could time it right and be in Edmonton while it happened, I'd definitely be in, I'm still very new to the Scotch game and would love to get to try a bunch.

Good call YS! I've also been powering through a bottle of the Aberlour 12, and an Irish whiskey I've been loving, Teeling Single Malt. I'm actually just on the way out the door to our annual Quarter Cask Club Whisky Event, should be a gooder! I will report back the results, probably tomorrow though. I know for sure that the new Highland Park High Volume is on the list, as my son is bringing it and he and I have, ahem, sampled it a bit already. It's fantastic, no sherry finish, just good old white oak bourbon ex casks, and it is realllly nice.
Anyway, look forward to the reporting tomorrow. I think.

I know it's not Scotch, but have you tried the 40yr Canadian Club rye?

Evening! And by the way thanks to everyone for this thread. I'm much too inexperienced to contribute, but have been taking tips and learning my scotch. Recently a Benromach 15 and then Laphroaig quarter cask. Good stuff. I preferred the quarter cask.
So I was looking up shortbreads and found this, anyone know if it's good?

Yes, and I can see why it has won some major awards, including best whiskey (of all kinds) two years ago.
That is one fine, smooth sippin' whiskey.
This year just started getting into some of the better bourbons...some mighty fine hootch out there.

A buddy bought me a bottle of Auchentoshan 12 year... said he heard from the store clerk it was some of their nicest stuff. I couldn't agree more. Smooth!
Picked up my 2nd helping of that last week (which is rare, as I usually pick out a different scotch each time I head out for a new sniff.) This stuff was just too good.
The new bottle I bought is the Springwood style. Will be good I'm sure.
Cheers.

You sure that we are talking about the same whiskey? IIRC the 40 wasn't released until this past fall.

I just picked up the Kirkland blended 12 year from Costco and it's pretty darn good. 1.75L will last at least to new years haha

On the Scotch note. I've never had it yet am interested in trying it out.
What is a good one to try for the first time?

Are you new to sipping whiskies?
If so, I’d avoid the Islay’s and keep your cost lower as the taste can be an acquired one. Superstore is your friend, their prices can be substantially lower than other places but their selection is limited. AnCoc or Glenmorangie could be a good place to start. Strathisla 12yo is a nice whisky as well.

I would think that Oban is a good one to start on.
Glenfiddich 18 year is also good, better than the 12 but considerably more money.
The smoothest ones I’ve had are some single batch highlands. But at about triple the cost of a bottle of glenfiddich 12.

I’m pretty dumb when it comes to Scotch but I did buy a bottle of this at the duty free store, what’s the opinion? I think I’ve tasted better...was hoping for the Smokey flavoured but didn’t know what to look for.

Glenfiddich is a fine whisky, and I'm sure you will enjoy it, but you won't be getting any smoke or peat out of them, sorry. If you like the smokier profiles, look to Highland Park offerings at the mild end of the scale, and work your way up to the Islay malts: Ardbeg, Lagavullin, Oban, Laphroaig, Bruichladdich (Dark Arts if you can afford it! Yum!) Bowmore (Which is a lighter one as well)....
They are all fine whiskies, and come in all sorts of different offerings at different price points. Try a few, enjoy them neat or with just a drop of water to open it up a bit....and Merry Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas to everyone. I will be enjoying a couple of whisky's tonight. Hope others can do the same. I have even convinced the kids that Santa might need a whisky to warm his belly tonight.
So whisky and cookies for the fat man tonight!
