You got that right!
In all my 40 years of hunting I cannot think of any time where a tracking dog was needed.
Must be lots of poor shots taken I guess.
I’m all for using a dog to track your wounded game but with a permit issued from local CO in case there is an issue and you should have to forfeit your tags if you fail to recover the wounded animal.

You have to tag your animal as soon as you find it… so using a dog and coming back later would also be illegal.

There is plenty out there taking poor shots sadly. I have worked with and spoken to too many hunters that “miss” multiple times every year before taking their deer. November long weekend around here it is common to hear guys out by the road letting loose everything they have at running deer. There is plenty of those who believe in the theory if there is lead in the air they have a chance
Should be a canceled tag loosing an animal dog or not.
Needs some cold weather to improve movement so I am not bored on stand contributing to this go no where mess lol

It’s not surprising that there is wounded game. How many guys do you see out hunting without binoculars and no shooting sticks or bipod.

Lots out there like that. It’s unfortunate all the carcasses I find after the madness is over. I always mark the ravens when I see them congregating and go looking after the season.

If I couldn't find it that night, I could call F&W, and explain the situation, and ask if I can search for it the next day. Alternatively, I could go bird hunting in the area the next day, and if I stumbled onto the animal in daylight, I could call F&W, and ask for a found dead permit, to take the carcass. Many officers would have no issues with these approaches, to see that an animal doesn't go to waste, but if they don't, it's too bad for me, I did my best not to waste the animal.

Not to get too technical, but the season technically closes as of the end of daylight on the last day so going after it that evening or night would be hunting in a closed season. Kind of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. There are a lot of laws that are loosely worded on purpose. An officer may charge you, they would have a tough time getting conviction so they don’t.
When I use my dog to recover game that I knew was dead. I don’t want any human tracks for her to follow. I don’t feel I was doing anything wrong. Certainly an officer is allowed to charge me if he thinks there’s wrongdoing, but I believe he would end up looking silly in front of a judge.
I believe that trying to be sneaky and pretend your bird hunting Or just walking your dog but actually looking for a wounded animal is questionable. I certainly wouldn’t judge that because I think it’s OK. Bottom line, if an officer decides to charge you, he is welcome to do it, but he is certainly not the judge

Your faith in our legal system is remarkable and not something I share.

Why would we punish people for doing the right thing??? Not all wounded animals are wounded fatally. There also many reasons bad shots happen, maybe you’ve been lucky and never had it happen but not everything goes to plan. So why allow a tracking dog then require people to agree to something they never would?

😀 it’s not necessarily that, I believe in doing the right thing with my ethics and within the spirit of the law. I also believe f&w and the courts ability to prosecute is very limited particularly when they have a weak case.

Then again, if you weren't looking for the animal , you might not have your license or tag with you.

You should come to 158 during rifle season and watch all the wounded deer with arrows broke off in them or dead laying in the standing crop when everyone is taking the crop off and slam into the knife on the header. There isn’t a farmer, and very few locals that bow hunt in this zone. Yet our phone rings 15 times during bow season with city folk asking to access our land to track a poorly shot deer. They don’t find them…. We do. Petition going around to end general mule buck with bow and arrow in 158 currently. The rifle hunters put there deer in the truck box
