Most elk are not on the side of the main road, especially if the traffic is almost bumper to bumper
Maybe today is a good day for going to Calgary, because lots of Calgarians in the Foothills. Lol 😆

Was on a lease down near there opening morning that I usually bow hunt and see nobody ever. I started super early, was 6km deep by legal. Elk were acting like it was still the rut, bugling and chasing cows. I shot the first legal bull I saw (smaller 5x5) when he stepped out 40 yards away thinking I bumped the herd, turned out 200 head at least with a couple cranker bulls never even moved after I shot. Had multiple bulls come in to under 100 while breaking down my bull. 2 hours later turned into a war zone, counted 10 shots over the course of a 2-3 hours including a couple within 200 yards. Never saw anyone though. Never heard any wacks either not sure if misses or what. Hope other guys were successful!
Also… couldn’t believe the amount of guys just driving laps on the roads. Saw one truck do a dozen laps of the same area while packing down a ridge.

Congratulations
My son was there on opening day
One area had 50 trucks parked, he counted them lol
Every trailhead had a bunch of trucks in front of them.
He thought someone shot at 3 not legal bulls and missed, because they came running in front of him, but can't prove it
I stay home on opening weekend.

What's the deal with this zone? Every year there's a post on it being a warzone. What's so special about it?

Two different groups of hunters
Local guys, who live within an hour or so, but also lots of guys from Calgary
Too many people pick the same place on the same day
Not saying anything bad about the city guys, but some people just don't get it, like half a dozen guys on new quads blindly following each other, etc.

Yep. It's the one day a year you're guaranteed to see the F&W in full force. Last year someone killed a cow and left it and tried blaming me for it. Don't think the fish cop was interested enough to go for the 1.5 hour round trip hike to investigate.
My buddies and I just laughed and then described the guys who were packing out a bull less than 100 yards from the dead cow elk. He said yep, that's the guys who said you did it. Meanwhile my dead bull was like a mile away....

I gave that area a miss this opening day and weekend. But drove up to Calgary on hiway 22 and counted over 50 trucks parked between the Waldron and Chain Lakes.
That's a lot of eyeballs and rifles looking for the bulls.
I can't wait for the millenials to get bored of elk hunting and move on to something else. It's too much now.

That’s a pretty **** attitude to have. While I agree since Covid it’s been way to busy, that’s like me saying I can’t wait till you old guys can’t walk so there’s less hunters. Sorry I enjoy hunting and the outdoors

X2
I remember about 4 years ago
Went hunting with my 16 year old son, millennial
I was 58,baby boomer
He shot a nice big muley buck and we even posted some pictures on AO
So there's room for both the millennial and the boomer

For me it's not an age thing its all about respect.
The lack of respect for hunters is crazy and only getting worse imo.

I don't see how any game animal can survive very long in 305 anywhere on crown land during rifle season .
The driving off road restrictions ndp brought in are not inforced. Quads everywhere. Trails everywhere, People everywhere.
Deer all moved to claresholm town. Wolves even moving east.
Alberta overstocked with people. Wrecks what used to make Alberta great.

Wmu 308 was wild on the opener to. Every approach off 22 full of vehicles and over 75 vehicles in the Bob Creek staging area.

Ndp can and always can kiss my ass. The trails in 304 And 305 have been the same for 45 years . You drive you accomplish nothing , you walk and you will have luck

YouTube videos out of the states is a cruel mistress to us. Alberta is not like Wyoming Montana Idaho and Colorado. Easy to get suckered in. I’m hating YouTube these days haha

Totally agree. Way too many boneheads with GoPro's on setting up camps right where the elk should be living or in passes where they have travelled for 100's of years and we wonder why they are not around now?
Most people I have ever seen in the back country is this year.
