That's the stuff they used to serve the cowpokes at the saloon unless they asked for the good stuff.

My cousin came by for a visit over the weekend and brought a bottle of this. I'm not a huge scotch guy, but enjoy the odd one.

This is my new favorite.

I don't have a full range of taste or smell. The "good stuff" would be wasted on me.

I opened this one the other night, the 2014 Ardbeg Supernova limited release. Stashed it 9 years ago, and figured it was time to try. Apparently it is Ardbeg's most heavily peated whisky at 100 ppm+, but finished in sherry cask so a bit of sweet with it. Anyway, it's a dandy, not for the faint of heart. Only available at auction unfortunately.

A good review on it here:

Not to derail the thread but...
I used to have a wee dram on a fairly regular basis - the various Highland Parks, Jura, Dalmore all being amongst my favourites (and RedBreast - but not technically scotch)
I seem to have slipped away from them (The Horror!) and have been exploring Cognacs and Armagnacs. We used to be limited to Remy, Hennessy, Courvoisier "the big names", but it seems that liquor stores are now much more interested, similar to Scotches in trying a few lesser known varieties

So I would suggest if you thought that something new/different was a possibility - Hine Rare or if you are feeling affluent Hine Cigar Reserve.

I know - heresy, fortunately AO doesn't publish addresses

Can’t go wrong with any Ardbeg, sherry finished would be something I don’t think I’ve ever tried with any peated whiskey and 100ppm, that’s getting up there for sure!

Grants in coffee at elk camp, I can live with. Not a sipper for me, but in fairness I'm a snobby dink about whisky. But, in coffee it's just fine.

We had our annual whisky tasting last night, some nice drams poured. I brought the Ardbeg 2014 Supernova, a great way to finish the lineup. The Glenmorangie Tokyo is a dandy, going to have to track one down. The Tomatin 18 yr was also a standout, very sweet if you like a whisky like that. Good time had by all.

^^^ love the colour on the tomatin 18. Do you know a cost on that one? I enjoy the tomatin 12 as an everyday kinda whiskey and it is a good price.

I have an Ardbeg and a Tomatin but neither say their age. Maybe they're both super high end? I wouldn't know the difference if they aren't.

It was right around $200, and that was the winner after voting. Not inexpensive like the 12. My Ardbeg was 3rd, the Tokyo was 2nd.

Anyone else get to enjoy Kensington Wine Market's Scotch Advent Calendar this year? My wife got it for me and wow, what a great way to try a number of different whiskies.

Many strong ones in the 25 days, but the best new one for me was Amrut 2013 9 Year KWM Port Pipe 4660. A KWM exclusive and one that will hopefully grace the cabinet soon!

I would love to get one someday. Don't suppose you can post picture, or list of contents?

Looks like a good lineup, I've only had 3 of those (Old Pultney, Bowmore, Ardbeg Beastie).

I haven't met an Arran I didn't like yet, will have a look for it and the Amrut. Thanks for sharing.

As an aside, I picked up a bottle of Waterford Irish over the holidays (at the same time I scored the last bottle of Tokyo Tale).

Fancy bottle, expensive, and a harsh young whiskey that didn't impress me much. Redbreast 12 is same price and 10x better. I hate gimmicky whiskey. It was recommended to me. Disappointing.

How has this thread languished for almost a year? Bumping with one of the finest whiskies ever...

Had a few drams of the Dalmore reserve last night as I had a pork butt on the smoker at 6 AM so found it fitting.
Awesome for the pork and whisky.

Nope, broke it open because I love it. I had bought every one that was available a few years back. I recently shared one with a great friend and his adult kids while I was visiting. It was *very* well received.

I am down to one that opened bottle, and two that will need to be saved for a special occasion.

Picked this one up the other day, it's a dandy too, if you see it it's worth grabbing...
