Default Sometimes you just gotta Pass on a deer

Went out last night with my son for white tails. Rattled a few times without much luck. Near the end of legal light my son was like "Let me rattle, you don't know what you are doing". He watches a lot of Youtube and Chris Bee so as he was rattling I stood up, and was kind of mocking him waving my arms around saying "look how good my rattles are". Then he says "Shooter buck dad" and grabs my phone and starts filming. I get on the gun and the fun begins.

The Buck came right in to 50 yards. Had I listened to my son, I would have "dropped him" lol. Luckily I didn't and I still get to enjoy the season for a while longer. Check out the video. Man, that was a fun night.

That takes a lot of self control! But you are right, way to early to shoot a buck!

Been there done that with my son the last couple years out in the woods or in the deer blind. Great post, don't have to shoot everything all the time. Memories made that he will remember forever.

I often remember the animals I passed clearer than those I shot...

The story and video tell a classic story of early November rattling....

So many times I've been in place for hours, rattling, calling and just waiting without seeing anything,
then right at sundown, here he comes.

Love that story. Sounds just like something that would happen with me and my kids!

Thanks for sharing the video. Love to see how they respond to calls.

Hope you get some good opportunities in the coming weeks!

Man, that must have been tough to let pass. All seemed so perfect yet if you're happy to pass on him, good for you. Good luck this fall as it should only get better from here on deer I'd think. Thank you for sharing!

My boy is a few sits into his first big game season and the criteria for a "shooter" is if it has a pulse lol

We are good on meat already so trying to get him to hold off a bit so he can at least experience the peak rut to come. Patience young one. It only gets better.

Thanks for all the comments. It sure was a blast. My son is 16 and he shot his buck with a bow from a saddle a few weeks ago so now he’s along for the ride (and he has a Moose draw which we haven’t been able to fill). I’m taking advantage of having him with me while I can. He’ll be in his 20s and moved out before you know it, and it won’t be a daily luxury anymore to just go hunting with my son.

It’s funny, after the encounter he confessed he kind of wanted me to shoot it because it would have been smaller than his archery buck. Made me laugh. Can’t let the young gunz get too cocky.

Nice footage & a big bodied deer. Love that spin & departure. I've seen that more than few times - often when I didn't want it.

I remember the time I was grunting to a good sized buck out in an alfalfa field, giving him my full attention, when I heard a snort a short distance behind me. He died.

That’s what it’s all about right there… love your confidence to pass on him. That’s gonna be a core memory for you and your son going forward. Can’t wait to see what you decide to fold your tag on and hear the write up!
