Not sure if anyone ever comes out West... but the fish are here pretty good numbers of Coho and Chum just opened in the lower mainland. Tons of them around. If anyone is interested in a trip the fishing is good.

Chinook start around September on the Vedder and have tailed off now, then Coho last half of september through end of november, chum come in october through end of november.

Such a crazy fishery but is it not a full out war zone as in lots of people?

It's called combat fishing for a reason. Lol. I grew up there and while I miss the salmon, I don't miss the insanity. Peace can be had though if you have a jet boat or are able to miles on a pair of boots.

Nah, its really not that bad. The river is 30 Km long on the Vedder and there are several other ares rivers with hatchery runs. So lots of area to fish. I mean sure there are certain areas close to parking where there can be lots of people. But if you watch these videos you will see it's not like the typical shoulder to shoulder combat fishing you see in some photos. A lot of time I'm the only guy around. I do walk though away from the parking.

I'd agree it's probably a crazy zoo on weekends, but if you go weekdays and afternoons it really isn't very busy. Plus you don't have to fish in those areas where there are 50 guys stacked up.

Last time I fished from shore in Alaska we were tight but like you mentioned the further up stream you went the less people but you still got bumped from your spot occasionally due to a brown bear or two showing up.

There's more people in that picture than I'll see on the rivers I fish in an entire season.

I was down there in August visiting family who live along Keith Wilson Rd. I took a wander along the dyke and went from the crossing down to the heron sanctuary. There were some spots that had a decent amount of room, but most places were lined up like this.

One thing that tells me is that summer time is maybe not the time for me then. That looks awful!

So I'm guessing the reason you may see less than 10 people on your river all season is that it's not located in a city, within walking distance of many people's backyard... where you are able to go and catch Chinook salmon to 40 pounds, coho salmon to 20 pounds, pink salmon, sockeye, chum salmon, steelhead 20+ pounds, rainbow trout and bull trout 5+ pounds. Never mind catch, keep four salmon a day! Just like I did, four hatchery coho and 3 wild coho in under and hour Friday and got a limit of hatchery coho again today before noon. This might have something to do with the number of people.

I'm not sure what rivers you're talking about. But as far as I'm aware you can't go catch ocean fresh coho in the North Saskatchewan.

When I started this river fishing I didn't like the idea of having people around. Growing up in Alberta I was used to the thought process if someone drills an ice hole 100 yards away it seems too close.

Then after a couple years on the river I realized something. This is actually a fishing community. You gotta immerse yourself in the experience. Enjoy the company, the tips, netting each others fish, telling stories about the big ones that got away. After fishing the Lowermainland rivers since about 2015 I have gained a real appreciation for it. I have met so many people and you run into them every year. It's really nice just to wander around and run into all these like minded individuals to spend a few hours with fishing and chatting. It really is something special that is completely foreign to the Alberta Angler. I think they're missing out.

I too turned my nose up in disgust and told my wife it was frustrating and hated it the first two years... then it clicked and turned into my favorite time of the year to fish.

Salmon fishing is like this even on the ocean, you can have 30 boats working together fishing a tight shore reef. Everyone knows their place and gets in on the action. We will be on the salt in 8 foot swells passing each other within 50 feet. Everything is cool.

It's just different out here. I love it! Couldn't see myself ever leaving the coast now.

I like seeing these fish. That’s a spectacular day bringing home 8 in an hour.

Are there peak times during the season where it’s great fishing like you’re experiencing or could you limit out like that any month?

Where I fish in Alberta it’s like shooting fish in a barrel for two months (June-July). You can’t keep them off your hook those months and then you gotta put work in the rest of the year to get on them and more importantly entice them to bite.

Your post has me thinking what I value more- great fishing close by or great hunting. Would be great to have fishing like that just a few minutes away AND moose and elk. That just might be what heaven looks like.

The peak salmon runs go from September through the end of November with the best time for catching limits to be September 15th through Nov 15th. After that is more like usual fishing. Slower, tougher... but you get most of the river to yourself outside of peak times.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. It sounds like fishing is fishing whether salt or fresh. Couple months of lights out action and then you gotta work for it regardless of where you’re at. Looks like your own slice of heaven! Thanks for sharing!
