Default Free Money - Unclaimed Balances

So found this link in an article and decided to try searching it. Much to my surprise, I found $498 that was being held by the Alberta Government's unclaimed balances department. Turns out Blue Cross had money they owed me from 15 years ago, that was never received by me. Instead of just sending me a cheque, they sat on it till it went dormant and then sent it to the unclaimed balances department.

Claim process was very simple, had my money in 3 weeks. Well worth putting your name into the two searches to see if you or family, particularly things like parents who have passed on, have unclaimed money.

Best of luck. Post up if you find money too.

How much is $498 from 15 years ago in today's money?

I searched and didn't find but was surprised that a lot of people have the same last name which I thought was uncommon.

Don’t do this search if you have the last name Smith or Wong.

Yes even the government endorses such tactics as it would be in best practice to return it promptly to the rightful owners
(it's akin to admitting no attempt or consensus was ever made)

Yes it does. Mine said undisclosed too, also didn't say who it was from. Got that info when the claim was accepted.

If you have trouble with the search, try using Chrome for a browser, Firefox works but can be REALLY slow.

Searched name and nothing but my son came up. I notified him a few months ago and he dismissed as prob scam. Reminded him this morning after dean verified as legit for him. He has submitted claim with previous address going back 5 years. Will see if anything comes out of it

Nothing, and with an uncommon name, the search was very quick. Even my last name had few results.

Found an undisclosed amount (says over $50) from a old 401k (the equivalent to an RRSP here in Canada) that I had contributed into when I worked in the US from 20+ years ago.

Probably not big money, but it's there and mine to claim.

I see my name for Calgary....lived there in the early 80's while going to school.
No details given, I would have to apply and wait for results to see if it's me I guess.

Here is another link to the Bank of Canada site which holds dormant bank acct balances that have been submitted. I would use this to look up any deceased relatives you might have that may have died with Bank Accounts that the estate didn't consider and the accounts have gone dormant. Note the search is province specific so you will have to input each province the search subject may have lived in
