Default Misconceptions

Years ago I had a friend who was showing me his 32 special black powder shells he assembled. I picked one up and shook it and I could hear the loose powder in the case.
Now I was always told by people that with black if loose you would blow up or ring your chamber.
So I echoed to him what I had always heard from people who were echoing what they probably heard or read by some safety ranger in a magazine some time.
Anyway my friend laughed at me and shot all 50 rounds. Wasn't accurate but it didn't blow up.
Obviously this isn't the way to load black powder and depending on the charge or gun under the right circumstances could cause bad things to happen and I'm not recommending it but I'm just saying there is alot of lawyer proof safety ranger stuff out there.
Black powder is easier to ignite than smokeless. That's why in flintlock or percussion you really need real black powder. Pyrodex doesn't work as good.
Black powder actually makes less pressure than smokeless. You can put black powder in a smokeless powder gun but not the other way around. Well you can load it up but you have to know what you are doing or you can blow up your black powder gun with smokeless.
Black powder is not sinister.
Military still uses black powder but they use it as a duplex load more for ignition of the modern smokeless powder. Holy Black powder is not some sinister dangerous threat to public safety.
As a firearms community we will either hang together or hang separately.
Through regulations if we loose retail black powder or if it costs $100 a can. We loose black powder flintlock shooters. It's just another form of a gun ban.
I won't be home today so I can't respond to comments

I have been shooting BP since the 70's ( past national champion) and still use black and brass as my main pheasant loads ( check the stickies for loading both muzzle loading shotguns a d cartridge shotguns)
I never heard of anyone saying black powder was evil or sinister. I sure have seen some sloppy and complacent loading practices with it though.

Smile Cat's rre-loads

You have to see his re-loads. They are a thing of beauty! Each one perfect, the shot shells have a card over the shot and a rolled crimp. I'm embarassed to show mine.

I prefer pyrodex in cartridges and my revolver it burns cleaner doesn’t foul as bad as the holy black, compressed loads ignite better example in 45-70 I put. Wad under the bullet for a tight fit.
The airspace trouble comes into play when the ball is not seated firmly into the powder leaving a gap for air pressure to build bulging or bursting a barrel.
Pyrodex can be used in a flintlock if you use black for priming.
Black powder burns fast inthe cartoons bugs bunny makes a powder trail as a fuse that burns slowing to the charge nope the whole line goes up in a flash ask me how I know that.

So alot of the fun in old guns for me used to be learning how to get them to perform. Sort of like working at your truck. When I was into this and doing alot of it I used to always get better performance with black powder. Except with express type cartridges. Example 45-90 ,45-120,40-90,etc.
I used to get custom molds made. Off the shelf Lyman, lee, rcbs molds with narrow bullet lube grooves. For black you need wide lube groove or grooves or use a lube wad behind your bullet. You have to use black powder lube. Smokeless alox lube doesn't work.
You need to keep fouling soft. Make sure no gun oil in your barrel at the start. Oil is enemy of black powder fouling. Oil will gum up your gun quicker than anything.
I'm trying to remember your revolver? I don't spend much time reading posts in this section because it's always the same type of conversations about the same, off the shelf guns but someone on here posted picture of a 62 police. Original nipples? You will get better performance with black than pyrodex. Pyrodex even sounds different with sometimes weak ignition. If you don't get misfires with 10 caps and pyrodex it's a wonder.
This new world sucks. I went to a and w for lunch. I paid $4 extra for my teen burgers because I wouldn't use smart phone to get an app to get electronic money out of my bank account.
I went to bass pro shop. They wanted me to scan something with a smart phone for my place in lineup at gun counter. Not only did they not have any powders I would want but he showed me his order sheet. Forget about the old Alliant dot powders because they are not even trying to get them. Oh and because of this thread I asked about black powder. They haven't had any for over 5 years.
So then I went to doctors office. Doctor would not take real cash.
There must have been a million vehicles on the roads of Calgary yesterday. Everything looks a like. All plastic eggs I wouldn't want if free. Even the houses look the same up there.
I'm so thankful to be home again.

Finding black these days is hard I buy at gun shows or private deals I’ve yet to find a store that stocks it, the cost of shipping is high because it’s classed as an explosive ot a propellant like smokeless.
Interest in traditional black powder shooting has declined, inlines are what people are leaning towards now maybe if a mountain man movie remake comes out interest in the old ways will pick up

I rarely buy anything from big box stores anymore except for some of my Hornady bullets from CT here in town.
The vast majority of BP I have, i bought from a good friend who tours the shows , and I buy my smokeless powders from Higginson.
I don't worry about a particular powder I can't find like Red Dot, I buy what I can get and adjust accordingly.

Started using Pyrodex in my 62 revolver because I ran out of 3F, the SliXshot nipples work good with #11 caps although with #10 caps they don't seat deep enough to allow the cylinder to index tapping them deeper could be real trouble the stock nipples work better with #10. I've never had a problem with ignition using Pyrodex it does recoil less accuracy is very good. Like cat says you shoot whatever you can find these days

target at 7 meters aim point is red the red target (factory sight is set for 75 yards)

They are kind of like buying a classic vehicle. You put some love and time in them and they can really perform. I still think that if you had everything right that real black powder would work better in your 62. I'm also suspect your slingshot are helping your ignition quite a bit.
Bellevue (duelest1954) has awesome videos on rumble and maybe on utube if utube hasn't taken them down yet. But excellent source on tuning these up.
People think antiquated technology can't expect much out of them. But if everything right, I don’t think expecting to hit a 6" gong everything at 70 yards would be to much to ask for.
If you watch Mike's videos remember old guy with bad eyes and health issues. I can't shoot like I used to and neither can Mike but his videos are excellent source.
It's the working at old guns and the learning that's fun. Friggen prices of originals are pretty high right now . Hopefully Pierre Poilievre will restore things and maybe buying new reproductions will be an option for the public again.
I don't like the dress up part but cowboy action shooting looks fun.

Supper was ready and I didn't have time to proof read what I wrote. Spell check keeps changing my words and to late to edit but SliXshot was one of the Spell checks that changed to slingshot
