Default MDT Carbon Stock

MDT launched there carbon fiber stock today. Pretty excited about it. It weighs less than 2 ilbs. Has a integral arca rail. You can choose different bottom metal depending on your application. Seems pretty impressive. Not gonna lie I like buying products made in Canada.

I ordered one. So when I get it I will post my initial impressions.

A buddy of mine already ordered his, he's pretty excited about it. I think there is a wait time on them though, not an in stock thing?

Ya there is a back order. Me and a buddy put our order pretty early in the day, so hopefully we get ours soon. We are planning on doing the NRL team shoots in Canada. I will post some photos on this thread when it comes in.

We also have a couple of carbon fiber barrels on order so we should be able to make weight.

I'm not 100% sure but think he is tossing around a 6.5 PRC or 7mm SAUM build on his.

I thought long and hard about getting that chassis. I hear they were going to launch the carbon stock and for once in my life I was patient and waited.

That will make a very nice light build. He doing it as a hunting rig or light target (NRL Hunter matches)?

I like the Oryx stock. I am seriously thinking of dropping a Rem .222 in it, for use in the gopher fields. I love some of their higher end stuff but the banker does not!

Hunting, he's in prairie zones, I think he wanted something light for packing in coulees, and able to reach out on windy flats.

That sounds like the perfect choice and will be a very nice build.

It does seem like a very impressive stock. I'm drooling over one, I think it would be the last touch to my 300 saum. But the 300 saum isn't high on the priority list since I only use it for certain tags.

For an NRL hunter set up. I think it's the best choice. What cartridge are you and your partner running for the team matches?

Default Cartridge Choice

We are going to be running 25 Creemoor. It will be a bit tricky to get over the power factor but it can be done. We were very close to picking the 6.5 PRC it would be an excellent choice for NRL Hunter.

What would you run?

I hope to participate in 2 matches the one in Cranbrook and the one near Calgary (Stavely).

I went and watched the match at Stavely and was sold on the concept. I just wish I was a bit younger but I think I can handle the physical side of things.

Looks nice but honestly at that price and still needing a bottom metal not sure I would buy it before a Wildcat stock.

Looks nice, except the protruding screws.

On the hunter bottom metal, that one screw just seems to be excessive sticking out like that, and the adjustable cheek rest.

For that price they honestly should come up with something better better than those screws.

Interesting I couldn't find the actual listed weight of it, but maybe I missed it.

27 ounces no bottom metal
30 with Hunter metal
31 with Comp metal

Taken from MDT's web site. Have to scroll down a little way

Thanks for that.

If I was in the hunt for a new stock, for sure it would be a contender.

I am interested in the MDT HNT26 chassis to pair with a Tikka T3X 6.5...something. I first saw this on MeatEater when Janis was using the chassis (unsure on chambering though).

That said, once a guy buys a rifle (and tosses the factory stock...), buys the MDT chassis, how much is that truly going to weigh? Prophet river are carrying a Weatherby 6.5 Creed on their 307 action with the HNT26 chassis and list it as 6.8 pounds - the same as a factory Tikka in that chambering? And over $4000.

For $4000+, if weight is my goal, the better option could be a Weatherby Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Ti, <5 pounds unscoped. Done.

Default Updates

So I thought I would update you guys on the stock. The barrel channel is going to be some what limiting for competition. That being said it is more than generous for any hunting contour. My current 22 Creed barrel does not properly fit in the channel. It has a 1.25 diamater at the action and that fits (oddly) but the taper to the end of the fore end is making contact (tried to run a $20 down the channel and it stuck). My barrel would be similar to the Krieger Bull/ Heavy target. Looks like MDT recomends 1.20 at the action and that makes sense. They also state it takes up to a Sendero Contour.

I have a M24 Carbon barrel comming soon. Its 1.20 at the action and 0.90 at the fore end. This should fit (close) but as long as it doesnt contact anywhere I will be happy with it.

As far as weight goes for you NRL guys. With that heavy barrel, a Curtis Action, A 34MM 56 mil objective scope and rings with a heavy bipod it came in at 15.6 pounds. Not sure about the accuracy of the scale so take the number with a grain of salt. I will weigh on a friends scale that will be more accurate.

I will post some photos when the new barrel comes in. Ill also post some weight numbers too. If I get some time to do the barrel break in ill post some comments on the general shootability of the stock, its ergonomics and comfort.

I was able to put some spacers in the buttstock and it was a very easy process. The spacers give it a very positive stable feel. I am a bigger fella and like / need around a 14 to 15 inch Length of Pull. I purchased the spacer kit for it but it comes from MDT with a few in the box. I have it set to 14.5 inches and that is very very comfortable. I have 2 of the spacers from the extra kit left over. So far, sitting behind it on my reloading bench it feels comfortable and easy to get a clear scope picture. It shoulders nicely as well. The fore end is quite grippy for hunting applications, this was surprising since its carbon fibre, MDT has done a nice job with this. The cheek riser is minimalist but comfortable and effective. The handgrip is very nice. Its a perfect blend between a target grip and a hunting grip, I really like the feel. It feels alot like the fore end and is quite grippy. It has two ambidexterous thumb shelves on the tang which are perfect for target shooting. My thumb just goes there naturally. Very nice. I will write more after I get it out and shoot it.
Hope this helps anyone thinking of getting one.

I see your point about the screws. I suspect they made it minimalist to keep the weight down. Ill have to put some white out or a small rubber o ring on it to index my cheek height when I remove the bolt to clean or transport.

My build is primarily going to be for NRL Hunter but I am not going to lie, a 7 SAUM or 6.5 PRC barrel might find its way onto this rig for hunting season next year. I even thought of experimenting with a wild cat and seeing how the 6.5 PRC case could handle a 7mm bullet.

Yeah the 25 cm would have to be pushing fast to make power factor, like 2950. Truthfully, I'd buy a 25 cm before I bought a 6.5 cm, but thats for regular prs. I've seen too many 6creeds exploding bullets. For an NRL hunter rifle, I'd go 6.5 prc, only cause my 7 saum barreled action is 32" 1.25" straight contour. I have a lot of 7 saum components so kinda a toss up, between 6.5 prc and 7 saum.

I kinda want to make my 300 saum into a switch barrel with a 6.5 saum just because but I'll probably go 6.5 prc because the availability of factory ammo. But lots of 6.5 saum brass online.

Have you got a 22 built up, with CRPS, Rick hosts a hunter match for 22 and it's so much fun. I'm hoping to make the Hunter match next year in BC. I'm pretty sure the Alberta 22 hunter and King of .22 miles will be held at my wife's farm for Alberta. If it's a go, you should come try it out, can shoot my back up 22 if you need a rifle.

Default As Promised

As I promised, I would post the rifle with the carbon fibre barrel when it arrived. This beauty is chambered in 25 Creedmoor. This rig is so light I can hardly believe it. During break in it was able to shoot some Sub MOA groups. I then took it out to 400m and it couldnt miss. The recoil was very manageable. It truely does have a dead / no vibration feel. Normally I prefer shooting a rifle in a chassis system but this thing was every bit as pleasant to shoot. I am very impressed indeed. A big thank you to the experts at EMP Precision. They do build fine rifles.

I have a 22 Creed barrel and a 223 Rem barrel so maybe I should come and shoot. Both are pretty heavy profile though.
