San Pedro, Belize

Heading to San Pedro, Belize in February. Would anyone have any suggestions on fly fishing this area? Both guided and/or self directed. First time there and of course would love to hook into the legendary Bonefish or Tarpon. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sorry no suggestions but that sounds like a great time. I have always wanted to fish Belize on the fly. Check the Reddit forums, they are filled with a wealth of knowledge (and some dumb comments to ). Here is one thread with a quick google search:

Go on Facebook and connect on the Belize and vacations page. Lots of good information..the local guides will be all over you for cutting deals and best fishing.

Rented a condo on Ambergris Caye just north of mid-island. Stopped into the local fishing store and employed three different guides on three diffrent days of fishing. Two were great and one I had to read the riot act to. Be very specific on what you want and how long you want to be out. You will catch Bone Fish maybe Permit and if you are very lucky and very skilled with a fly rod, Tarpon.
I did not catch a Tapon but did land dozens of Bone fish and a couple of Permit.
The fishing store owner was Canadian so everything went quite well.

Omar Arceo is a great one. I see he lists David from fish tales as one of his friends so you could also ask him as a reference. I would go down and target Permit as you will get many shots at bones anyway. He has a Facebook listing - Omars freelance fishing. His nickname down there is "doctor of the flats". I have fished many locations in Belize and he is one of the very best.

You can have good success for bonefish from many of the piers/docks north of town. You can golf cart it up past the Margaritaville Resort and get into some good fishing all along the way. We stay up by Portofino and I was catching bones almost every day from the docks near there.

Secret Beach side also has plenty of bonefish and wadding from shore. The seaweed (sargassum) can get bad on the reef side but the secret beach side is weed free. Can wade both north and south of the strip of bars.

I seen guys fishing for Tarpon on the lagoon side on the road to secret beach but never tried it. There's lots of crocs in that water.

We were there three months last time but haven't been back for a couple years now.
