Bone Fishing in Tulum Mexico

I am heading to Tulum in November and I just got a guided day on the flats for bone fish locked in. I have been wanting to fish for bones since I went tarpon fishing in Key West about 10 years ago.

Just wondering if anyone else has fished the Tulum area? Any recommendations on spots to go for a DIY? I have been researching and it sounds like they don't allow/like people fishing off of the resort beaches. I did find some rocky outcrops a short walk away to get out of the resort area but any other tips are welcomed.

I have a 8wt TFO BVK and matching reel, salt water line, shrimp/crab/bait fish patterns tied and ready to go. Now I just need November to get here.........

Have fun! I did a day trip for bonefish about 10 years ago with these guys: https://pescamaya.com/. Despite a cold front I caught some fish and it was an amazing day. They are in the Sian Ka'an which is quite a ways south of Tulum. It's expensive, but they will treat you well.

Thanks. The guide I have booked said his spot is 15 min from our resort. Really looking forward to hooking in to something. Been a while since I have fished the salt.

Let us know how the fishing was when you get back. I go to the Huatulco area now. No bonefish, but some great fishing for mahi mahi and sailfish.

I will for sure. I tied up these purple crazy charlies for the trip. Going to do some pink ones this weekend.

Shore fished Tulum in May 2022. Was there for a wedding and stayed at Dreams Tulum. Went out a couple mornings (sunrises were amazing) and walked the shorelines. I would look on google maps and search for small sand patches (size of a car) that I could cast to close to shore. Some would have fish but many did not. Dreams Resort was nice because there were no other resorts beside it so you could walk and wade for miles if you wanted.
The setup and flies you have will be perfect for your trip.
Have good polarized glasses (preferably amber lens) and wading shoes. Be sure to scuffle your feet if your wading on sand beaches to move the Stingrays before you step on them.

Thanks for the info on the rays, I would have never thought about them laying in the sand, and they do like to burry themselves.

I got flats boots and Maui Jims for glasses, so should be good to go on that front.

Was down at akumal area for two weeks years ago, google earth helped a lot for my do it yourself shore fishing. Wasn’t fly fishing but got into a boat load of bone fish in shallows catching them on a very small silver and blue spoon. Very spooky buggers so as they made there way near me I would toss way out in front of them and reel in slow, bam fish after fish in which I am sure you will have success too.
