Action screws
How much does it actually effect accuracy? Just asking, as i dont know. I do have a wheeler torque screw driver, and after playing a bit with diff ammo on my 300 wby, some that shot better last year, i wondered if something was loose.
Wood stock so set it to 35lb. The wrench went around, imaging if u will, clockwise, from 3pm to 11pm before it broke on both action screws
If im not mistaken for weatherbys, 35lbs for wood, 55lbs for synthetic on an aluminum bedding block?
Going to try and fire a few rounds tomorrow with ones that shouldve shot better as see if the results change. Do those screws seem that they were on the loose side?

Is the rifle bedded?
Does it have pillars, or a healthy pad of epoxy where the screws go in.
Wood grows and shrinks, the effect of this gives varying torque effects.
How much oil has soaked into the wood?
See the variables in the equation here………
FWIW, the SBR guys don’t even use action screws just epoxy and recoil lug friction…….
It’s not the torque value but the evenness and lack of distortion(warping) on the action you are trying to achieve.

You need pillars or you are guessing.

I had my 300wby taken apart by PR Precision, had the barrel and action bead blasted. Changed my mind on having a brake manufactured for it, and picked it up.
I had asked him if it needed bedding to go ahead and do it, and after his inspection, said was not necessary as it already done and was a good fit.

Honestly, bedding is a small part of torquing guard screws. Compression is the problem and the only way to control compression is with a pillar of some sort. It may be just fine without them, but you will not find consistency in any meaningful way.

All my hunting, range rifles are pillar bedded I have played around a bit with screw torque and it doesn’t have a measurable effect on accuracy I just tighten them to 55”lbs and call it a day. Some of the factory offerings I have played with that didn’t have floated barrels and a great fit to begin with I played around between 10-35 “lbs and you could notice poi shift

All the replies are much better then what I’m about to tell you lol
I have only used a wheeler torque driver on a couple of fancy schmancy light weight stocks.
All my old wood and Tupperware tikkas get the front action screw fairly tight, and the rear one snug enough it doesn’t move. Rifles have all shot better than me with that set up. To each their own. I also don’t weigh brass or turn necks cause I’m a hillbilly

Yup!
Pretty pointless to worry about screw torque with that lack of bedding…….

Nothing wrong with using a torque wrench on a firearm that is not bedded . It at least gives you a reference point. I see many screws that are bubba ed by going gorilla tight . Also see cracked stocks where action screws are loose .
