Well another one under our belts and what a blast. Made arrangements with Rockies Heli Canada a month ago to fly in and chase westslope cutties. After the weigh in and gear loaded we were off for approx 30 minute flight by a great crew. The Ram River was blown out where we were put down on a sand bar. A little disappointing as the water is usually a nice blue color but we were bound to make the most of it. Camp all set up snuggled in amongst the trees at a bend in the river and tents were right on the edge of the river which made it peaceful to listen too at night.
We had a mixture of weather but no rain during the day and no snow too.
We had two half days of fishing and two full days which gave us a chance to figure out where they were and how to go about getting them to see our flies etc. using the hopper dropper technique was the ticket for the most part. The odd surface bite but most were on the dropper with about 2-3 feet below the hopper.
We ended up well over 40 fish landed, a few nice ones and I witnessed two studs get off as my wife did her best to keep them out of the faster water but sometimes your win some and sometimes you sit on the bank with that stare of disbelieve and everything that comes with watching a big beauty cutty swim off.
If the water was clear we would have had an advantage but we persevered and kept at it. Funny after all the walking the biggest fish was caught 50 yards from camp. Lol.
If you’re ever up for an adventure to fly in to some gorgeous country check out Rockies Heli Canada, staff, air crew etc are super friendly and professional.
Our ride in.
Wouldn’t let me have control….lol
Even caught a few spin casting too!
Gotta change it up now and then.
Until next year!!!
