We fished the first km from where it dumps into the Athabasca in the first week of August. Only two 10" grayling to show for an hours fishing for the three of us. The Athabasca was better than the Berland for us, thats for sure.

The berland fish populations have been severely depleted by poaching and resource roads dumping sediment into the spawning grounds.
It was common to catch 3-4 lb whites and 16 inch graying years ago, especially this time of year. Sad what our government has allowed to happen.
I'm 57, fished the Athab/Berland religiously this time of year since I was 12. You are absolutely correct on how it has declined. But so has the numbers of fisherman so maybe there is a comeback.
I have found that the fish around highway 40 seem to get displaced every time there is a major blowout due to a heavy spring runoff or rain event. usually takes a year or so for the Atha-bows to move back into the fishy looking sections.
