Default 30+ dead Salamanders in window well

My dad sent me a pic this evening of his window well with over 30 dead Salamanders in it. They are all the same size. He has found the odd dead one in the past. Anyone ever seen something like this? His window well is near level with a cement pad in the backyard so they must just fall in. He’s gonna rig up a barrier of some sorts.

Like a bunch of lemmings.....

I've never seen that, but surmise it happens quite often.

I remember crossing paths with a salamander migration out on the dry prairies....
Hundreds of 'em all in a row, following the leader.

Worked at a pipe plant in camrose. The cement pits used have dozens in them. They just walk right into them. Dumb critters I guess. Happened almost yearly.

Happened almost yearly.

Seams to be seasonal, I've found them at the bottom of post holes. Looking for hibernation sites ?

I pulled out a half a mile of fence posts. Next day was going to fill the holes with dirt and I happened to notice a salamander in the hole. I ended up reaching in and pulling out salamander out of quite a few holes. Mice as well but I killed the mice. Always thinking about snakes when reaching in the holes.

I've seen several crossing hiways around this time of year.

I check our wells daily. Caught and released several this year already. Usually catch them after a rain. I make them tunnels with a hand auger, cover them with a board. They go in, hang out. Still have a few hanging out where I made a tunnel for them. My 13 yr old loves looking at them, like outdoor pets. One Sally decided to make one of the tunnels it his home and has covered itself with soil and filled in the tunnel already. Getting ready for winter I guess.

Looks like they all drank the kool-aid. If you're handy with a sewing needle they might make a nice pair of boots.

We dug a outhouse hole into clay so it took 2 weekends to finish when developing a camp spot at a friend's farm. Covered it but enough of a crack was there and about 100 frogs went/fell in. All were good the next weekend and released back into the woods, you only heard them in the spring, never seen them or that many in one area. But to see that many in one hole, 5 ft out from the bush edge was crazy. I wonder if a few fall in and the noise they make attracts others.
