All one has to do is look at who is protesting these days. I fear we are on our way to being the next UK where multiculturism turns into this melting pot of lawlessness and riots every time a new group don't get their way.

We wouldn't need to import "bodies" if Canadians would have the wherewithal to get educated/trained in the many career fields that need filling in Canada. Importing people from the Philippines, India or Jamaica to then go through a short LPN coarse to fill a job that Canadians can't be bothered to train for is crazy. The same could be said of virtually any of the trades program.
On the other hand it looks like the gravy train of cheap offshore temporary foreign workers is going to come to an end this fall, so be prepared for a longer wait for your Timbits, cuz why would Canadians work for $15 bucks when they can go on EI????

This is such bull...
Anyone believing this is simple, can't even do basic math.
The ONLY reason 'Bodies" are needed is to look after the "New Bodies", new Immigrants.
97.6%.....

It's really not hard to understand why politicians don't talk about this. It's a topic they avoid to preserve their voter base and to increase it with all the new comers bringing more family with them once established.
Shouldn't be hard to understand.

lol.
As is usual of the AOF, the GD is rife with misinformation. Canada doesn't just let "anyone" in. I'd invite several you to actually find out factual information, but that would disrupt the comfortable Linus blanket of shallow, superficial talking points many Conservatives cling to. Many US politicians, in fact - right wing politicians - cite Canada's much more stringent guidelines as an example to follow to "crack down" on legal immigration.
Even my grade 7 students understand the basic math regarding population demographics. A country needs a birth rate of at least 2.1, i.e., 21 children born for every 10 sets of parents (20 ppl total) to grow, and that's the bare minimum.
Right now, easy google search yields the following reporting / information regarding Canada's fertility rate.
It's 1.43.
That means Canada, like many western, first world developed economies, cannot replace it's population internally. Immigration is the answer, that is, if you believe in the current model of globalization, economic theory that depends on the straw house of continual human growth. New consumers must create demand. Younger workers and entrepreneurs need to replace retired or dead ones.
It's a helluva dilemma.
-------------------------------------------
That all said, and to go with Sundance's headline, I would say, broadly speaking, I agree that serious consideration should be given to reducing immigration. Both with vetted applicants and refugees. Not zero; but reduced. Yes, even significantly. Canada - population wise - is a tiny country, and most citizens live in 6-8 large cities (depends where you cut off the word "large").
And, in contrast, Canada's geography works against it. Being an enormous, northern country that is cold for 8 months means very expensive infrastructure, just by it's very nature (so set aside inflation, for the moment). All the reasons SundanceFisher cited have merit to varying degrees.
Country is facing enormous pressure right now to reconcile (you could argue that certain opposite pressures are almost irreconcilable) difficulties and differences in terms of striking the appropriate balance. Even transcending debates over left v right wing perspectives and worldviews, the tension of opposite economic needs is pretty challenging.
But I think the correct direction - for the present - is a significant reduction right now. Country needs a breather.
Oops...did I actually just agree with some of you? lol
Actually, the real problem lies right in Alberta, haha. The traditional, Christian Conservative families and ethos have utterly failed to live up to the expectations of having 6 to 8 kids per family. Tsk tsk...lol. (yes, for those failing to read tone and context...that was a jest).

Cons have clearly said a number of times, we need immigration, just that it needs to be cut back to where we can support it with the infrastructure, health, housing, jobs they need. Would be nice if they were a tad more picky about who they let in too, be a lot of Cdn citizens happy with a free hotel room and money and benefits they get at present, that some have had for a year or more.
Have the Libs minister's meeting this wk, caucus meeting again shortly, hard to say what they can dream up next, not much of anything most likely. We probably have another year of grin and bear it, Trudope is perhaps a lame duck within his own party now at best, whether they admit it publically or not.

Appreciate the complement about defense. And no worries, I'm used to the GD barbs and disappointment in who I am. Oh well. I'll just have to stick to indoctrinating and brainwashing children as my therapy. lol
Hey...look on the bright side. I am about to get real busy for the next 10 months with teaching and building my non-profit. I'll have very, very, very little time to waste with the closed-minded on the GD. Perhaps I'll come back in November if Harris wins (It's a big if to me; I don't believe the current polling, and I think the election will be close), just to gloat a little bit. It's always fun when the Conservative sheeple adopt the "sky-is-falling" mantra in their tunic tearing, apocalyptic, the world is ending hysterics. On the other hand, she might not win.
Hey, did you know that Trump killed a bi-partisan bill about immigration, co-written by some of the more hard core Republicans? That's a nice fun fact for ya, event though the original topic was about Canadian immigration.
Another fun fact, this time Canadian; nearly 40% of my students are ESL (now ELL) and come from immigrant families. It's funny how when you meet lots and lots of people from different places, you just naturally become...a more open-minded, nice person. With a razor sharp ability to condescend to a group largely made up of...ancestral immigrants to this country. Have I used the word ironic yet? lol
Take care.

We've gone over this before; there were riders attached to the bill that definitely weren't in alignment with the standard Republican platform. If it was simply about immigration, it would likely have passed.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was a pretty clever trap that they set; now many enjoy parroting lines like the ones above, how Trump/Republicans won't support securing the border against mass migration.

What many people don't realize is how it affects the other 60% (and less, in some areas). The fact is that they get held back because the teachers are spending a disproportionate amount of time with the ELL kids, just on comprehension alone.
And when the parents of the non-ELL kids realize that their kids aren't learning well in that environment, they ship their kids to a school with a higher english-speaking demographic just so they can get up to speed. And what happens to the original school? They get a reputation, and with Alberta's education's funding system, the funding dries up as enrolment drops.
Throw in a handful of kids with special needs, and their allotted EA funding is distributed so that others with special needs (who didn't qualify for funding but still need special supports) can at least get some help. Teachers then have to pick up the slack. Guess who else suffers?
Back to the ELL students: Factor this in - Certain segments of them are hardly attending, since they spend as little time as possible in Canada - just enough so that they can claim Canadian benefits - and spend the rest of the time in their home country. Except, of course, when something bad happens in that country and we have to send rescue flights to bring them "home" to Canada... At any rate, they don't even get the chance to learn English given how little class time they get. Again, teachers have to work extra hard to get them up to speed...

A public school teacher shaping our youth.
Have you ever created and ran a successful private for profit business or even worked for one
After plague in middle ages the peasants were much better off due to reduced numbers competing for same resources. The peasant revolt after the out of touch intellectuals tried to knock the peasants back down.
This is the problem in Alberta today. To many urban Ottawa loving big shots. We don't need you to make a living. We make a living despite you. You need us or why else would you live in Alberta when your heart is someplace else?
