What are your experiences with 7 SAUM
Hi everyone, I've been hunting for a while now and have shot 308 win as my calibre of choice just as long. I am not intending to get rid of my 308, but I am interested in trying out a rifle in 7 SAUM. What have your experiences with recoil and stuff been? I have no issues with my 308 but I am curious as I do not want to develop bad shooting habits such as flinching. I plan on getting into reloading one day in the future so hypothetically round availability is not an issue. I don't really want to shoot something big like a 300 win mag, some people like it but it's just not for me, so I am curious what your thoughts are. Thank you for your time

You have landed on a great caliber but I would suggest you have a close look at the .280 Ackley. It performs nearly identicle to the SAUM , is a SAMMI approved, handles both .280 Rem and 280Ackley cartridges, plus lots of factory ammo available. Fast becoming a favorite chambering in the marketplace.

If your not reloading the 7SAUM not an option really. I shoot the 7SST and it is a great round, slightly faster than the SAUM. Recoil is manageable for sure, I run a brake though. It is an excellent hunting cartridge.

I have a Remington Model 7 in 7SAUM that I’m actually selling. It’s a nice compact rifle, I had Remple shorten and flute the factory barrel. It’s perfect with 140 TTSX ,if I was keeping it I would consider threading it for a brake.

Nice cartridge, but a handloaders proposition, as factory loads are virtually non existent. The 6.5PRC is a similar cartridge worth considering.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, I really like the idea of the 7 SAUM, but upon a cursory look around for rounds or brass I found them to be quite scarce as several people have suggested so I will probably not go with that one

6.5 prc
I will echo Elks comments about the 6.5 PRC. Lots of nice rifles out there chambered in that cartridge. Good Factory ammo availible. High BC bullets. I had mine shooting the 143 ELDx at over 3000 fps and wasnt over pressure. Shoots flat keeps velocity at distance well, high sectional density for penetration, whats not to like about for a hunting cartridge.

I own a 7 saum, had it built. I really like it. I've owned 7mm-08 and 7 Rem Mag's and 280 AI's...I guess I'm a "7" guy. Recoil wasn't an issue with any of them.
ADG makes brass for it and its available, I've seen it even when I wasn't looking for it. I also found factory ammo - Nosler with 160gr Accubonds, that is very hard to find, but my rifle shoots its very accurate so I haven't had to reload for it yet.
My plan for reloading was to shoot 160-175gr with it for hunting everything.
A Winchester Model 70, short action with a magnum bolt face, would be ideal for that cartridge, as it has a 3" mag box so you can seat the bullets out a little farther if needed.
If you want a little more factory options i would look at the 7 PRC or 280ai.
