Default Long Luggage Alternatives

Maybe a shot in the dark, but does anyone here have any recommendations for long luggage for travel, perhaps something that isn't originally intended as luggage? I'm looking for something to travel with fly rods and gear, including some longer spey rods, so something around 40 inches long inside yet still within the airline standard sizing of length + width + height being under 62 inches. It would be nice to be able to throw in a couple rod tubes and and have room for other gear and clothing.

So far I've looked at ice fishing rod cases, photography lighting bags, baseball bags, does anyone have any other suggestions or things that have worked for them?

Fishpond rod case maybe. Or hockey bag.

I use a zippered Mountain Equipment coop duffel.

Has backpack straps as well as regular carry straps. MEC zippers seem to be the best quality Ive owned.

This bag has been to Europe, Asia, Yukon, dragged through streets filled with debris and fire in Taiwan after an earthquake, and it still looks very good and it doesnt attract attention

I make my own from ABS/PVC pipe. have a dozen or so, 2", 3" and 4"; up to 90" in length for my 7' one piece rods. Seal one end, screw end at the other. Put a 3" foam cutout in the bottom and inside the cap. Wrap the rods in light cloth. Chose a size that fits all your rods; you do not want them rattling inside. I get 2 one piece rods or one 2-piece rods in 2", up to 6 2-piece rods in 4".

I use a hard gun case for rods and most reels. The larger reels just take them off and stuff in a bag.

This would probably be the most cost effective method. Could even cross drill a hole through the open end to put a bolt through and drill a hole through the bolt to lock it if your worried.

We do this as well. Hard double rifle case will fit “4” 2 piece rods with reels attached

A snowboard or ski travel bag with rod tubes or abs sleeve inside.

if your' flying I'd worry about cold cracking a plastic pipe. some cardboard tubes, best would be used newsprint roll cores or something similar.

Personally I’ve found bringing rods, reels and flies with me as carry in to Cuba has been easy and never lost my gear before the trip.

I also have a regular large luggage piece with wheels that my sages metal tubes fit corner to corner in. Need to put hooks in checked bags on the way home and sometimes rods it helps to have that. I have also used a hockey duffel.

Doesn’t apply to you, but on a recent trip a group of 10 showed up with ski bags… airline said they didn’t pre-check in and register the bags and they said there was no room on the plane and they all had to leave their bags behind. Extra stressful for them as there were not allowed to check in until someone came and removed all bags from the airport. They were not happy so lesson learned. If you are booking a trip, and it asks how many bags… know the number and plug it in. Costs more but at least they are accepted then.

My buddy I often fish with has a carry rod holder for 8 rods. We pack it and he Carrie’s them.

Based upon having been on 5 trips in 4 years and Air Canada lost our luggage 5 times… I’d be Leary of checking any critical fishing gear.

Default Another vote for high quality hard golf bag case

Airlines hardly give them a look until you tell them there are 12 guns inside. Then be prepared

Thanks everyone for the ideas! I ended up going with a photography lighting case. At 38 inches long inside it won't hold my longer spey rods, but at least the dimensions add up to less than 62 inches in case I get a super picky airline agent.
