Default Tips on catching under ice beaver

When the pond freezes over and not much extra water coming to keep water level up, beavers can not afford to lose water in the pond. Each day the male beaver swims along the dam to check and repair any leaks. If the bank is high enough, at each end of the dam on the high water side there will be a small run into the bank which is used as a resting place. He will patrol right close to the dam. I have caught several in a conibear placed along the dam. I also set snares by the feed bed but the ice here can be dangerous.

That's good to know as I have a couple ponds I'm hoping to trap this season. Ours started Nov 1 and once hunting season is over this Sunday, I want to get my traps out before the ice gets too thick to work.

Default Traps at dam

Coincidentally I was setting up a house yesterday- found a strong run ; by carefully sweeping Snow ahead of me . Set 3 run sets (trap stands / 11” Savageaus. Another run on other side of house treacherous ice; couldn’t get to a clear spot to set (too many sticks at edge of house)
So; I went to the best thing; activity along dam. Beaver instinct calls for dam inspection; usually bigger adults. The bubbles showed previous dam inspections

Set two sets parallel with dam , in about 2.5 of water. Used a little fencing on either side.
