Default Electric wood splitter.

Hello everyone. I am looking for an electric log splitter and was wondering if anyone has experience with them. I had a hydraulic one but it didn't last long, as it was under built and too light.
I see they have kinetic ones as well, but I don't know anything about them.
Also the one I had the ram stopped short of the wedge and I ended up pulling the logs apart, or flipping them around to finish the cut.
Thanks in advance.

I've used a cheap princess auto log splitter for more than 10 years. I have split up to 20 inch diameter logs with it. My kids split all of our wood for a few seasons when they were younger, and had no issues with it. If it was a shorter piece of wood, I had a 4x4 block of wood to take up the space and it worked great.

The only logs it had a hard time splitting were full of knots, but I think that's the case with any log splitter.

Another nice feature is how quiet it is. I'll never switch back to a gas powered log splitter.

Default Princess Auto 5 ton

Been working it hard splitting all the nasty knotty crap trees that need to be thinned out at the Acerage.

Takes some work but it will split some nasty size stuff.

Kids can run it safely. Bought a 4 way split anvil for it this year and that works great too.

I would buy another if this one crapped out.

They go on sale every year and there is often a few on the Marketplace.

My aunt had a big gas one. More power. Faster stroke. Pain in he butt to store/move etc for the amount of wood I deal with.

Love the quiet

I've got a 37ton gas powered one. It cuts the wood as fast as I can load and unload.

Princess Auto 5 Ton here as well. I’ve split a lot of wood with that thing. Best $250 bucks I ever spent. They typically go on sale a few times a year.

I think they have a 9 Ton electric now. Do not know much about that one but I’m intrigued.

Default Kinetics Are Great

I've had a couple of electric splitters and they worked well. Purchased a kinetic splitter a few years back and cannot say just how good these work. They use way less fuel than hydraulic and with 2 people you can get through a pile of wood in no time. It's likely 3 times faster than hydraulic splitting and vey simple. Gave my electrics away to family that don't burn the wood we do each year.

Just wondering how easy is the 5 ton princess auto splitter to move around. Real heavy? Can one person handle it? Lift it?

Default Easy to Move

I've had the 5 ton princess for 2 years. No issues wheeling it around. Carry it would need to be done by 2 people to save your back.

Have have split 10 cords of wood and zero issues with anything so far.

Thanks
Tony

Default 110 lbs

5 ton electric from Princess Auto is 50kg

Fixed handle at wheel end. Flip up handle at anvil end

Little wheels are fine to drag it on a good surface.

You can stand up ( close the valve on the hydraulic tank ) to store it and it takes up very little space.

Got some 16 inch logs to split. Might have to get one. It's a lot of work swinging the big axe splitter.

I have a real cheap one that I bought from a guy driving around in a huge truck and just happened to stop in peace River ab when I still lived up that way…I paid $175 bucks and I finally changed the hydraulic fluid in it for the first time in about 16 years, it’s still splitting wood for as long as I can sit on a chair amongst the wood, a bit slower for sure from the gas ones…but I can split any wood that we use here all winter…I’m sorry I don’t even know the brand name…it’s yellow in colour with sawdust mixed in…still going to use it till it stops!

I've had one from Canadian Tire and put a lot of wood through it.

Not the fastest, but I was amazed at what it was able to accomplish.

Bought a Princess Auto one 14 years ago.

Heated the house with nothing but wood for 5 years. It never let me down even once.

It can bind up on really big cuts, but read your wood, and it will work forever.

In regards to the electric splitters. I have one and it works great.

I wish I could figure out a "safe" way to bypass the start button so I can use both hands to handle the logs.

Lot of "Google" stuff...but skeptical...

I put a quad hitch on it. That was 5 years ago, still going strong.

Well I just went to Canadian Tire and picked up a 6.5Tonne yard works splitter. It's on sale right now for$400.00. Couple of things I like is the cycle time is fairly fast, and it comes with another wedge that you can replace the push bar with. The motor switch is an off/on so you don't have to hold it on all the time.
Foot pedal is a bicycle cable and it is too short. Hopefully it will stand up well, cause I have a lot of spruce with big knots In it.
Thanks for all the information, i appreciate it.

I have the CT one from 10-12 years ago and I bet it’s split 50 chords of wood. You will be impressed with it. Some big spruce with big knots will make it struggle a bit though. Enjoy
