I had to be on a pretty heavy dose for a while and still have a prescription if ever needed again. What do you want to know?

my dog is allergic to his own fur , he takes 1 pill a day along with an antibiotic . same drugs as humans take as we get it from the drug store , it can cause liver problems over time so his blood is tested every 6 months . i know hes a dog but it works the same in humans . he has no weird reactions to it all but we have to change his dosages when he has a flare up.

It affects everyone differently ,it's to reboot your immune system and help heel certain infections .From your eye ball to your big toe .

Lotsa great folks here on AO ,but no one knows your health issues so talk to your pharmacist or anther DR, Specialist and get regular blood work done .

Telling you why I took it is no benefit to you and not wise on my part .

I wish you all the best,
JD

Default Prednisone

I took/take large doses for breathing problems and have developed a collapsed femoral head and cracked upper arm just below the femoral head. The bone has died due to lack of blood flow. Probable cause according to surgeon is over use of steroids. Very painful but something I have to live with as they won't operate because of my breathing health..As stated, that is just me, you may be different?

Yeah I was definitely edgy when on the prednisone. Had trouble sleeping too. Can't say as I had weakness though. JD848 has it right. If you are having concerns you need to talk to the doc and make sure everything is okay.

I was supposed to be on a 25 day course starting high and tapering off. I only made 9 days before I had had enough, diarrhea, high anxiety and crazy shakes. I quit. Didn't help what was being targeted although it did wonders for my hip. Of course it doesn't last.

Long term use can cause a moon face round look .When the war in Ukraine started Putin's face was swollen and very much rounder ,right away I thought he was ill or long term prednisone for a medical reason .

He also was shaking an his left hand was not right as he held it tight on his desk another sign of using of the drug long term .

I even wrote about this on AO .

Stick with it and it will get better for you once you are on the taper schedule. It’s suppressing your immune system for your body to get out of its own way. I know people that been on it and ask your pharmacist next time you’re in about your experience and they’ll walk you through it.

I’d talk to your pharmacist
They usually are the best at monitoring the meds your on and possible reactions
If you’re in kidney failure, you probably have a bunch of different teams working with you. But sometimes the communication between all of them is lacking. The one who is consistent in the whole process is your pharmacist

Default Prednisone

Yes I’m on a donor list , but because my blood platelets are low , my blood wouldn’t clot when I get a kidney transplant, I’m taking Prednisone to boost my platelets count , which is working , but Prednisone has few unpleasant side effects

3 or 4 years back something came on almost overnight, could barely walk or work, extremely painful trying to put a shirt on or do up my seatbelt, could barely lift my arms higher than my shoulders, back was killing me. Doc said it was Polymylagia Rheumatica. Gave me prednisone, after 3 days I felt like a 20 year old, pain gone completely, felt so good I forgot to finish the prescription.

You want to have your numbers in the best position possible before you get your organ
Id talk to you pharmacist and see what they think
They will know if there are other drugs that maybe better suited for what you need. Your dr's will individually try and solve a problem, but in doing so at the expense of something else.

Melatonin isn't a sleep drug so it won't function like that. It simply is a hormone that tells your body it is time to sleep. If something else causes you to wake up it won't keep you asleep like a narcotic does...

I got a lot of extra work done when on Prednisone - with only 3 -4 hours of sleep a night what else is there to do? Idle hands makes busy minds.

I was recently had a short term prescription for Prednisone as part of a course of treatment. Edgy, sleepless and made my heart pound hard enough to be felt externally. Had to quit after a couple of doses.

My other half’s boss broke his leg a few months ago and it got infected during surgery. One month of being on prednisone and now he has what is called “medically induced chrohns disease”

At 51 years old, I haven’t heard of many success stories about this steroid.
It screws with bone density and bone strength big time as well…..

Question your doctors motives ALWAYS!

Default I admire your confidence in this site.

I too have been a Prednisone user and I had no side effects and it did me a lot of good, but this is a high tech question and I have a Rheumatologist monitoring my progress. You need to talk to your Doc. about all this.

I encourage you to "hang in there" the drugs and treatments are getting better everyday, we have 2 medical schools in Alberta and the quality of health care associated with the big cities is very good.

I wish you every success.

Not assuming my input will help the OP, but my late father was on prednisone for over a decade. Probably closer to 2 decades, but the memory is a bit fuzzy. Anyhow, in his case, it WAS treatment for chrohn's disease. (ileitis and colitis) There weren't many treatment options for that, he even underwent an experimental surgery for it. (marginal success)

Dad was a very slim guy (unlike myself) but prednisone caused swelling of his face (water retention?) and generally made him look like an average, middle-aged man vs. a very skinny one-which would have been normal in his case. I know over the years, dad developed osteoporosis and went at least once a year for bone density tests. He became very concerned about breaking his back, seemed the focus was on his spine for that reason.

He tried a number of times to whittle down his dosage under doctor supervision, but any adjustment down cost him a couple of days in bed...and often had to go right back to the amount he was taking.

I wish I knew the dosage-I'd add that to the discussion.

Wishing the OP well..

Prednisone is one those over prescribed drugs doctors seem to hand out as if it was candy.

One of the issues with Predisone is that it is availble in generic forms these days.

As with any drug there are side effects which effect various people in various ways.

I would suggest to anyone if they are having issues with their prednisone prescription to consult their health care professional to see if the brand of predisone they are currently receiving can be changed.

Also certain pharmacies can actually compound a drug to suite individuals.

Drug compounding is often regarded as the process of combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient.
