Default Advice for a first-time prairie elk hunt?

Hi folks,

I've got a cow elk tag in a prairie WMU for this fall, and this is my first time chasing after them. Most of the advice I've found online has been for mixed forest/parkland/benchland type elk hunts, so I'm not sure how applicable it will be for me.

Any advice on looking for them in a prairie landscape in Alberta? I suspect I'll have to do a lot of my searching on foot, so I'd love to narrow down the terrain I should focus on a little bit.

Thanks in advance, and good luck out there.

Those buggers are like ghosts out on the prairie. It’s unbelievable that they can disappear with little to no cover.
Find the largest ranches or land unbroken by roads and glass them early in the morning and late in the evening.
In the prairie zone i hunt, they tend to stay far from roads. Until this year, i had never seen them in the river valley, but my son got his first elk a few weeks ago in a corn field right down in the bottom, so that tells me they can be anywhere.
Like was said above: what wmu and season are you hunting them?
If it’s a zone i am familiar with, i can give you a heads up when/if i see any

its not easy. i live down here and rely heavily on friends calling to tell me they have seen some. they travel so far, so fast, that they're here today, gone tomorrow. that being said, when you live in an area, you have the benefit of at least an idea where you may find some.......find the highest hill and spend your time with glasses and a spotting scope.

It's for 102, during the early October season. Lots of grazing lease to explore, but the roads seem somewhat limited.

I didn't say where before this because I didn't want people to think I was angling for their favorite spots

Those grazing leases may be shut down with the fire ban on. Not too many Elk around either.
